With the newly released ICASA findings ,suggesting that Local bandwidth should not count towards the cap, will iBurst be offering free local bandwidth now?

Ed, Sean... Are you guys going to offer this soon before being forced to? Or are you going to hide behind legalities like Telkom does?

Also no port shapping anymore... I need this to happen before the Xbox 360 is released here ;)

They are ADSL regulations, so I doubt they apply to Iburst at all.

From a competative perspective, however, Iburst will have to respond sooner rather than later. Unlimited local bandwidth and no shaping promises to make ADSL a far superior product.

I'm not too far away from biting the bullet and ordering ADSL...

Iburst need to start adding some sweeteners to keep me interested.

Ja, Gavin this doesnt apply to Iburst. It can only put pressure on them, and we could help too I guess.

Also, remember that some much better ADSL regulations came up a while ago, sayign there should be a 10gig minimun cap and no line rental, but it was just ignored.
Telkom could easily do this again, so you cant expect unlimted local to be definate.
It would actualyl be quite sad for IS, as they would pretty much be out of business if their local caps have no more value and SAIX becomes unshaped too.

guys, I have mentioned this before, and am going to repeat myself: local on iBurst is different to local on ADSL. iBurst run their own network, and buy UUNET (Verison) international bandwidth. They in fact do offer free "local" bandwidth, as iBurst-iBurst traffic is uncapped.

To iBurst it doesnt matter if you go international or not, they still pay UUNET (Verison) for any bandwidth that goes out of their own backbone.

mic_y is right.

Fantastic, you looking to irritate him? :p

It really sucks for us though, but mic_y, one thing I dont understand, how can Telkom or could Telkom have offered free access to any local, even if it wasnt on their network. like if you had ADSL two years ago you could even access the iburst network unlimitedley.

So dont Telkom have to pay to connect to Ibursts own network, like Iburst have t pay Telkom.

Okay i think I dont understand something, or its just that Ibursts own network goes via Telkom's leased lines, so everything is Telkom anyway.

I understand what you are saying mic_y, but the thing is I don't care :)

We don't have to accept these reasons. All businesses cost money to run, that doesn't stop the customer demanding what should be a given.

iBurst should offer free local bandwidth and stop port shaping. If Telkom does make it impossible then sue them. The more people who sue telkom the better.

Edit: The thing is. If Telkom offer Free Local and unshaped access and iBurst don't I will get ADSL. I really don't like Telkom but I need Local access... Cap me internationally I don't care. I need Local. So the ball is in iBursts court now.

Well, if local traffic becomes uncapped on the telscum side, then iBurst should be able to connect to telscum backbone for far cheaper than at the moment.

The big issue with international bandwihth is that it needs to go via the SAT3 cable or the satelites. But local traffic should be free/cheap.

iBurst must wake up ... and smell Telkom's smelly feet .... they have to offer local data for free .. there are nothing to it ... we want it free ...

Or the wifi comunity is just going to grow and will become a bigger thorn in their sides ....

Gone with local cap !!!!
Gone with all the other K@K that we dont give a Ratz@$$ about..

Personally I have no real issue with the cost of iBurst. Cheaper is always good but I don't mind.

I will not stay with iBurst if ADSL or 3G offers free local and they don't.

Simple really... If Ed or Sean would like to tell us what is going to happen it would be appreciated

QFT - very simple.

I'm also considering biting the bullet (right now) and changing over to adsl. IBurst should do something about their incentives. I really want the shaping to be gone! And so what if it was to help other ppl that just browse the net. Those ppl moved over from dail-up and to them it would be freakin fast anyway. They also don't know what shaping is.

And most important of all, why are we kept in the dark; not receiving any info from ibust? can't sean or those ppl that's on this forum shed some light? or isn't there any info on the website?

I am confused.

Why are people using iBurst at the moment? I see a few reasons:
1) They do not want to deal with Telkom
2) They do not have ADSL coverage in their area
3) They are mobile users
4) They use very little, so iBurst Lite is cheaper than ADSL would have been

Now, I do not see any of the above being affected by the ADSL "local is free" changes. Am I missing something?

Yes Moedeloos you do.

I use iBurst because of 1) They do not want to deal with telscum.

I am in a ADSL coverage area, I only use it in one place and I am not on the Lite package, but i still feel it is better than anyting telscum can provide.

Also, add to your list 5) They do not want to wait 3-6 months for ADSL

I got my iBurst in 3 days:
One day to find out how it works.
Next day to order and email them my details (Yes, no faxing needed, just a scanner).
Last to plug in the modem.

Beat that telscum.

You are only proving my point. iBurst will not be threatened by the changes, because the underlying reason people use their services has nothing to do with the "free local on ADSL". Regardless of whether iBurst now offer free local, you will remain with them, because the situation has not changed (in your case: You do not want to use Telkom).

I think the brains trust from IBurst is in a bunch of meetings trying to figure out how this affects them. That's probably why there is no feedback from IBurst, they probably don't have a clue and are brainstorming the whole thing.

I think they are coming under pressure and sooner or later they are going to have to respond to that pressure. Maybe they will come up with something interesting, like using a combination of Verizon and SAIX for international and local traffic respectively. Or maybe they will go the tried and trusted South African Corporate route, which is contract, lock in and milk.

Anyway IBurst, you live in interesting times, with incompetent competitors. The market is yours for the taking provided you know how to take it.

I disagree Moederloos, I went with iBurst because I am a low bandwidth user and they offered the best package. However since 90% of my bandwidth use is local and since I have now opened up a local website I use a lot more bandwidth.

Telkom is becoming the cheaper option...

i will always go for the best value for money !!! free local sounds like a good option .. as long as i can play my BF2 :p

PS BF2 is a local cap eater .... hear hear !!

1) I do not want to deal with Telkom. But will if I have to.
2) I do have ADSL in my area, as do many other Iburst users.
3) I am not a mobile Iburster, for mobile access I use 3G/GPRS via my cellphone.
4) I use a lot of bandwidth.
5) Iburst is quick to install... but if you already have Iburst, the ADSL waiting period is much less painful...

Until recently the Iburst G3-G9 packages really were a value-for-money proposition when compared to ADSL. After the 1 August price cuts this is no longer case, and even less the case once the new ADSL regulations are in place.
