Free Microsoft Security Essentials gets mixed reception

Having two antivirus products on your PC is not a good idea.

Degraded performance and behind-the-scenes shenan i gans is the end result, the end user often loses out.

Well, if it was available in SA then they wouldn't have had 'mixed reception' from my side. They would've had a positive reception.

But it is available in ZA? o.O

Been using it for the last two/three days. It's ok. During full scan it can be a real resource hog. I also find it only uses one core, which is a bit antiquated... But other than that it's decent.

I'm trialing it for a while and I'll see how it goes. So far I'm pretty indifferent still.

Symantec's products arent very good either... I'm quite sure those get mixed receptions too.

I tried it out. Yesterday i noticed windows trying to do those automatic updates.

Seem like if you install MSE, then it by defaults changes the settings of the auto updater to install all updates. So thats not good.

Otherwise no performance issues on my netbook.

I like it already picked up to virusses since yesterday.

can't really say if it's any good, been running it since yesterday haven't it doing anything useful yet.

This is the message I get when visiting the Security Essentials site...
Not available in your country or region
You appear to be in a country or region where Microsoft Security Essentials is not available. Thank you for your interest in Microsoft Security Essentials.

I couldn't get it installed...

...oh wait:

*Your PC must run genuine Windows to install Microsoft Security Essentials.

Never mind, I will move along.... :D

But, yeah, as they say, maybe will get more people who use Windows to become a bit more proactive when it comes to AV protection.

Its about time MS does something... they ticked off the people with their over-priced OS and bad support, they made the enemies, damn right they do something to protect their own software.

This is month 2 of using it... I got tierd of Symantec telling me that legit software was deleted because they classified it as a hacktool...

Of course also tired of Symantec messing around with network settings, disconnecting network and VPN access, loading that damned network driver that messes up fiddling with network cards. muching about with my com ports and preventing me from using serial to connect to my cisco's.

basically... just got plain tierd of Symantec, they claim endpoint RU5 fixes all the problems.

I'll have to give it a go this evening.....

And anything is better than Symantec's carp..

I removed aVAst and and installed MSE and it did a scan in 6minutes, seems really light weight and I have not noticed any sluggish-ness associated with other AV solutions. Would be nice if they could add a semi decent firewall in the same product.

Been using it and downloading viruses on purpose. Detection so far was 100%, and no false positives. But it is early days still...

My netbook came with a 60 day trial of McAfee Antivirus, which I promptly removed and replaced with MSE yesterday. Time will tell.
