Free Microsoft Security Essentials gets mixed reception

Love the file size of MSE, hope the signatures and updates are just as compact. I've installed it as my primary Antivirus on Windows 7 RC, currently running the setup...

Thanks MS, appreciate it. ;)

I'm going to install it tonight. I have been running AVG free for ages since I get free updates thru my varsity network. But lately it's been annoying the hell out of me as it takes forever to do a quick scan when I open a folder with lots of exe's or docs. So I just uninstalled it to save a few gray hairs :D anyone know of any optimizations for AVG to speed it? I know mcaffee had options to change scanning behaviour.

I removed aVAst and and installed MSE and it did a scan in 6minutes, seems really light weight and I have not noticed any sluggish-ness associated with other AV solutions. Would be nice if they could add a semi decent firewall in the same product.

Will get flamed but the block standard Windows firewall is good enough if your not the paranoid kind. With the latest security updates I never have problems anymore

3G users BEWARE!

This little 4mb file cost me 280mb in data just now. The little ***** enabled Windows Update and I was browsing, didn't notice it

Wow - a security product from Microsoft. I will use it as soon as I have fed my children with my new baby formula from China...

AV should be free

I've been using Avast! Home Edition for AGES before switching to MSE.

Personally, I agree with Avast's comment on MSE's entry into the market.
Symantec, I think, is afraid of losing customers.

I used Norton before switching to Avast a few years back.. I has MORE problems with Norton than Avast! and Avast is FREE!

I think all Anti-Viruses, Security applications should be free.
It's like health... It's not a luxury. it's a RIGHT!

Anyone else agree?

MSE updates quite regularly, providing the best protection possible.
the program installer doesn't have any Definitions preloaded, it downloads the latest available after installing.

This ensures that the user has the latest and best protection available.

Yep, I get that any antimalware apps needs signatures and updates to function as required, but please leave my OS out of the equation.

My own fault as well, I never disabled the WUpdate Service, you go tera :o

i have been using symantec products for years, norton antivirus, when it works it does it well but hell when it goes funny it really messes up.

Unfortunately it does not work with Windows Server 2008, so I could not even test it.

My main requirement from anti-malware software is a minimal performance hit. Some of these can kill your machine if you're a developer - project builds can touch 1000's of files, each of which gets scanned on-access...
For this reason I've been relying on my wits alone to avoid viruses & trojans, with excellent results so far (touch wood).
However, I can vouch for WSE after using it since almost the moment it came out and can not notice any performance degradation and from others' reports here it seems to do the job of protecting your pc. Go, Microsoft.

For those who want to download it from Microsoft directly, use the following url (which tells MS that you're in the US):

The thing with Vista and anti-viruses is simple, install a light weight AV and make sure you set your user up as a standard user and NOT an administrator. Even if you think you are a massive guru there is no need to run as an administrator. It is like always running as root in linux, there is no need when you can be a standard use and just use sudo. If you run as a standard user, any virus you encounter will have little access to any system file and hopefully if it does, though some exploit, this will be the rare occation that your AV will need to work. If you need to install something, right click and run the single process as administrator only when needed. Stick to this and you will find that your AV will get bored and will hrdly ever need to help you out. Simples!

I thought Win 7 was virus proof?

You mean, it's not? ;)

Disconnect from the network or internet and disable the AV. Then run your compiler.

You only need the AV if accessing the web or unknown storage devices.
