Free Socks and Proxy Server...

Are you guys capped, trying to access it? Just a reminder, capped users wont benefit from it, more than likely wont even get onto it.

Stop it. Whoever you are. You're p1ssing me off.

Why are there always paranoid morons ready to spout rubbish at every turn?

Just because I have a low post count does not give you the right to assume anything.

Idiot.

Not impressed

nice MRBEEP nice to see people doing things without the incentive of profit
That comment is uncalled for. Clipse has actually done this community a favour by providing the services he does.

Besides there is nothing wrong in making a bit of a profit for your troubles. I suppose you think everyone must provide a FREE service? I hate to be the one to burst your bubble, but maybe its time you wake up from your dreamworld?

I am working on securing the server with Authentication in the near future, but for now it's a free for all.

Ok something Slimothy does not grasp with his infinite wisdom, this proxy does not do at all the same job that my proxy services do. My services is to allow international access after the cap, this proxy is to allow more reliable access before the cap.

I still cant get why Slimothy thought this would affect me, or even why he think I have anything against this. I still say, best practice would be to advertise this, as much as you like MrBEEP, but dont advertise the server/port that is being used.

Since this is done on the international pipe(users connect to it internationally) it IS easy for telkom to block it with a mouseclick/admin finger, so its not very responsible in my opinion to splash your address/port right in the open.

Why do you think the SA proxy4free servers get dropped overnight? Its well known that Telkom monitor all listed anon proxy servers there and simply block it!

Clipse how is the new pricing going to affect NukeCap, as I hear that even local is going to be capped. Do you have a strategy for this?

Well naturally the VPN will still be practical to use on uncapped shaped accounts, the proxy self can go either way. I have heard two stories so far, 3gig accounts will remain uncapped locally and self provisioned authentication accounts will be allowed higher caps but will be hardcapped.

Everything is still to unclear it seems ;/

Yep well said, SA businesses have to live with hope, How generous ;/

lol why did you mention that again clipse? it was all over and then you come back the next day and mention it again.... are you trying to punt yourself again?

Slimothy whatever you say man, now please try and add value to this section.

Now I feel bad for ranting. Sorry.

I tried this proxy last night for Limewire and I was getting 2 concurrent d/ls of over 30KB/s which amazed me as for the last couple of weeks I have been lucky to get 2 or 3 KB/s - ergo, I thought it worked brilliantly. I've got nothing to gain by hoping MRBEEP (or anyone else) can keep this type of service going, except speed.

As an aside, if it is possible, should we not be asking some questions?

1. Is it legal to offer such a service?
2. What are the cost/bandwidth usage implications?
3. Can Telscum prevent such a service from operating?

If it is legal and the costs are not dramatic, I would happily contribute either financially or infrastructurally to setting up a free/low cost proxy to improve my speed and as a happy offshoot, anyone else in SA. If there are no "loopholes", and Telscum cannot legally prevent it, let's get it going!

MRBEEP - can you maybe answer any of the q's?

Hey Friends,

Wow!! The server has been busy yesterday! I had to do a few improvements! Our ADSL family knows how to download!

Anyways, all should be up and running.

To anshwer some of your questions The REV:

1. Since the internet is a free, public service, this offering is 100% legal.

2. Depending on how much is downloaded, costs can get rather high, but I have special backbone access in the United States, so I pay about $0.50 per GB. I will be installing a download metering service this weekend, whereby I will let the Forum know how much was downloaded on average over two days.

3. Telkom can pretty much prevent any service they like, luckily, for every rule made, two are broken ;) There will ALWAYS be a way around their stupid blocks, and I will try my best to find them.

I am going to launch a .org website soon whereby more info will be posted. This will NEVER be a commercial service, and is not intended to be such.

I hope this answers some of the questions.

Best Wishes,
MrBEEP

with a hundred connections going this will cost u a fortune.

100X2.5GB(a day for the average person)X0.50$=125$X7=R875 a day.

how are u gonna afford that

avoiding shaping

Ok so will this work to avoid the shaping of my word of warcraft gameing in the states?

I downloaded Sockscap - http://archive.socks.permeo.com/cgi-bin/download.pl

then it asks me about protocol... do i use socks version 4 or 5?

then i give it the exe file for wow --- and it does not connect ;P

I use a network to gain internet connectivity, any problems because of that?

O and Clipse, i will be useing ure service as soon as my cap is history ;P

Heeeelp plz ;)

can somone please clear this up for good.

Does the socks server need to be international to bypass the shaping?

'cos i finally got a socks running on my machine and dc++ thru it.. but speeds are still crap.
