Free the Web

Better go empty my bladder before this announcement is made. I don't want to wet myself.

Announcement has been made:

Fans of Free The Web The time has come for change, a change where bandwidth should no longer be charged for by the gigabyte. You wanted unlimited Broadband access, and that's what we want to give you! We're VERY proud to announce uncapped Broadband from MWEB from R219 per month.

rofl

they actually posted it on the facebook page, uncapped 384kb for R219 and just saw something like free 512 uncapped for the first 1000 people to register via the facebook app

I just tried to sign up via: http://www.mweb.co.za/adslsignup/
, and the page gives me javascript errors when you use the "Look Up Postl Code" or "Next" option...

I would rather sign up electronically than wait for someone to phone me and ask everything over the phone...

Oh but at least this error brought me back to the... FB group so I opted in for the Free month special.... so now someone HAS to call me.

Signed up for the 4mb uncapped consumer option. So far very impressed, was very quick to set up the account and performance so far has been good. (Edit: there online page seems to have some bugs, but you can just phone them and do the process over the phone. Accounts are available NOW - only the "1000 free months" on Facebook start on the 1st of April)

Speedtest results:

Shout if anyone has any questions

How did you signup? There doesn't seem to be any way to signup, there's just a "Call Me Back" button.

Shout, Shout, let it all out, all you can eat broadband is what its all about, cmon!!!!! Ive been waiting for this cmon!!!!

Online sign up available soon

Thank you for your interest. The online signup will be launching soon, we will be sure to let you know as soon as it does. The product will only be avaiable from the 1st of April.

See this is all going to be an April Fools Joke! :D
Anyway you said the product will only be available from 1st of April.. how come people have it already?

Like I said before, I never ever thought that MWEB would be the one that came to the party....I'm still shocked!!!

Myself and a group of other people feel that MWEB crossed the line of proper decorum by not making their involvement in the Free the Web campaign clear at the outset. Many sincere Facebook members were duped into thinking this was a bona fide lobby group against the restrictions and prohibitive costs of broadband in South Africa. On the contrary MWEB couldn’t possibly have a vested interest in “freeing the web”. It’s whole purpose as part of one of the country’s largest conglomerate is domination.

We have started a Facebook page in public protest against the way this campaign was run. This is to secure online communities everywhere from exploitation by large corporates. If you share this sentiment please join our Facebook page and post your comments to the wall.

Thats why I never joined the group until I knew who was behind it. Now that I know I can just ignore it. :) No harm done to me.

I also didn't join the group until today so that I could post this sentiment to the their wall, however when I tried to post I was restricted from doing so. I blogged about it and within minutes a faceless Free the Web official engaged in conversation with me, claiming that they only closed public comments today because the launch was 18 March! One would think they would leave an open forum to allow new customers feedback. Or is that what they are afraid of me wonders..........
