Yesterday morning, around 10am, my line went dead, it was off for about 10 minutes, so I took a quick walk outside to check for Telkom vans, fearing the worst.

Walked around my block (I know exactly where my line goes across the poles and into a DB box by the shops) and didn't see any vans.

When I got back, thank god, my line was up again.

Now here's the interesting thing - I just downloaded a 43mb file from an international location at a rock steady 52k per second.

Telkom line speed test : Estimated line speed: 57.4 (kiloBytes/second)

Just tried a linux distribution ISO from SAIX - 51.4k per second.

So, my DSL384 is now a DSL512 !

Well, thanks, I'll take that free upgrade ! :D
Wonder if it isn't a username mixup ?
It does seem odd that the speed increase coincided with my line going dead, but AFAIK, the speeds are controlled depending on username ?

I'll have to see how long this lasts - hopefully for a long time ! :D

I've got DSL384 and those are the speeds I get...if you check your router, it should say upstream 320kbps, downstream 512kbps

384's ADSL sync speed seems to be 512 while 512's sync speed is 640. I think 192,s sync speed is 320.

But besides this uses some software too limit your speed on the ATM network. It seems though that sometimes that software gets a bit boggled up. I have had my 384 run like a 512 half the time :)

No, it's configured on your DSLAM port.
If they change the config, the line syncs again. I know this because when my line was installed, they configured it initially as 192. I spoke to some dude somewhere, who updated my profile to 384 while I was on the phone with him. The line synced, and my speeds doubled (I should have said 512 :p)

I'm not sure if the guy I spoke to was at the exchange, or was somewhere else -- the Telkom techie passed the phone to me, cuz he didn't understand what the guy was asking.

I am having my line installed tomorrow.......... adsl384
so I DO HOPE that I will have a "free upgrade " to 512 as well :o
regards

Ahh - so it was related to my "disconnection" - possibly, they installed a new DSLAM and for some reason maybe swapped mine out ?

Damn cool anyway :D -

My 384 behaves like a 512K line most of the time (for http and FTP).

My question is: Does anyone's 512K line behave like a 640K line?

It seems to be a pretty common thing. My 192 is also running at 192/320.

The question is, is anyone actually runing at the suppossed speeds?

64/192
128/384
256/512

I'm using a billion 5102SM modem, and there doesn't appear to be any way to check this, unless I hook up the telskum pasta maker, which I'm loathe to do, since my setup works nicely, and the teklom speed test tells me it's running at around 450k :p

In your web interface is there not a "maintenance tab"?

If so click on it, then click on "system status"

Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click on "show statistics"

That screen shows your sync speed

Naw, the billion 5102SM is a pure modem. There's no interface of any sort on it.
Although it has an IP address, and I've port scanned it, only 21 (ftp) is listening, tho nothing answers when I connect to it. *shrug*

I can't belive this

Just got a phone call from TELKOM. MY adsl installation that was supposed to be done tomorrow WILL BE DONE today............. what a nice surprise !!
ADSL here I come :-) :D

must go now

Congrats Clubbe !

My pessimistic side (or realistic) turned out wrong and you got installed a day earlier !
Cool bananas.

I would say, however, that you won't get 30gig down in 5 days - but let us know how you do.

Sure, you can get 30gig down of stuff you won't need - heck, just login to saix and download 10 linux distributions.

One thing you can do, get winamp and stream music whenever your at home - there's loads of cool radio stations. That uses up a fair whack of bandwidth.

Anyhoo, I'm still on my new DSL512 line - at least something has worked in my favour with TelkSkum ! - about frikkin time.
