The best thing to do is leave vodacom like i have nd othas have nd many still are.R2 per mb? Thats over charging im nt even gona compare voda prizes with vmobiles. Y charge so much? Y even charge 4 wap? How did voda make its money b4 wap come out huh? It still made lots! Im nt gona stay on voda nd pay R2 per mb! Its pathetic,nd counting on all da prombs nd down time voada has its nt worth it guys.

Vodacom eng. want users to pay 4 wap y? Simple because 1. They not charged 4 wap so it makes no differ 4 them 2. Without 2 many ppl on wap means more speeds. If nt free bt pay 4 wap dan rather pay 4 cheap wap which vodacom doesnt hv so jst leave voda

Ag asseblief. .. gee my krag. What a conspiracy theory.

Explain to us how VC can track my cell number from my comments on my ADSL. I don't post via cell phone if you think that is a way to do it. So I should be relatively safe and can blast Vodacom as much as I want to - or maybe they can trace my ip no on telkom internet (we know they own half of VC) and link it to an e-mail addy and check the logs when I phoned telkom cause my phone was out of order  - hmmm could work!

As for tracking abusers - I say do it.. they can do it on their network with no help from either my ADSL or Telkom - they do have bandwidth monitors I'm sure.

Skeptik... relax man :)

They can't track your cell number directly from your comments on myadsl. But I am sure they can run a seach through all of their outgoing data (which is held for 6 months) for your post. From that they will obtain your IP address, this is providing you made the post using Vodacom as your ISP, they can then identify you, your IP address, your MSISDN. If you are a contract customer, even your physical address and ID Number. Hell, they can even pinpoint your location with with up to a few hundred meters!!!

We also know the colour of your underwear! :)

Two relevant observations were made in the above thread.

1) It's a very complex matter to track users.
2) Why bother? Just bill in the first place.

So basically if you give them all the information they need to track you, they can track you? What mad skills.

Folks, just take a breather to consider what you're saying. You're thinking that Vodacom is tracking you either through usage of your cellphone for internet (why they would want to do that is beyond me) or you're thinking that the admins from this site are giving out your IPs on request to Vodacom for tracking (again a reason seems to elude me).

Either of these thoughts is pretty silly innit?

I think the key issue here is, as Vodacom3G said, why bother? Lots of things are technically possible but often either illegal or not worth the effort in the first place.

Gotta love the logic of some people here. All companies charge for their products in some way or another, its called capitalism. Although it doesn't look like a certain poster above got charged much for his language/grammar education, hopefully not anyway. :D

well this is a good thing. i was spending to much time online rather than studying for finals. which was a bad thing.and i didnt get caught like i did last time. to me it seems they altered it so it doesnt charge when you acces the Vlive portal like it did before, but the moment you hit a non Vlive IP you get charged. do you think Vodacom could have like "secret" promotion during december where they offer free net during certain times? (and only tell a few people so its not abused?0 cause that would rock.

Your ISP can monitor every single transaction of your internet connectivity very easily. They are easily able to monitor who is accessing the myadsl website and even see your post when you hit the submit button on myadsl. The same goes for every other unencrypted web page you submit information to. So my suggestion, if you are paranoid about stuff like this and don't want your ISP to have any idea of which sites you visit, your internet habits etc run a secure encrypted tunnel.
Perhaps MacNabs has the situation in focus.

From an interaction I had long ago with an operator when I had trouble connecting - he appeared to know which Web pages I had successfully logged into, based on my cell number.

It always concerns me when I ask a question and instead of getting (as expected) an explanation of a technical nature, I get a broadside directed in a personal fashion.

I don't believe we have had the full story about the claims here about who is being tracked "in real time" and how. If someone is using/abusing the Voda network and is posting here, then it is perfectly feasible for them to be tracked. There would also be obvious grounds for not revealing the details and the method ...

Let's not boast how we are going to find & track someone if it is all BS and then expect us not to challenge you OK? AND above all, let's not create a smokescreen by shooting by the hip saying anyone is "suffering form conspiracitis" or it is an attempt "to discredit" a network. If the network is behaving ethically, there is no reason to discredit it.

so what if vodacom is tracking you? i personally dont give a damn. they cant do jack anyway...

"After his comments, we watched for him"
So you saw him writing comments here and used that information to watch for him? How is that "nothing to do with forum activity"? We can then easily come to the conclusion that when a user is active here, he is active on Vlive APN and therefore 'trackable'.
{I've made my point - there's no need to play around with semantics. I'm not trying to inflame this issue. Just step up and admit what happened. }

I think the meaning was they watched for abusers in general and he happened to be one of them, not him specifically.

That's fine. However I do care. It's an issue that needs to be explored.

[I'd like to continue the thread here rather than have a duplicate post]

The monitoring is done on the Vodacom network and have (and had) absolutely nothing to do with any forum activity.

Skeptik got carried away a bit it seems..... Not even sure how he could read any forum involvement in my comments?

All we did was to log which cell-numbers suddenly started downloading large amounts of data over the VLive apn, so ld13 is quite correct in his/her comments.

You also said "I would pay very little attention to the comments by KeeS. The download numbers he quoted is impossible". If it was impossible, then why do you say you are tracking him?? <<---contradiction.

{I've made my point - there's no need to play around with semantics. I'm not trying to inflame this issue. It's definitely not personal. Just step up and admit what happened and I'll drop it.}

I get your point, maybe he doesn't know categorically that he is one of them, he's just assuming. Not saying he is, just pointing out that when you post something quickly you don't always consider all the nuances of what you're saying. Maybe too much is being read into it?

Anyone with the right skills can track you down be it your operator or a hacker. But its a complex process and your operator has every right to track the illegal usage of their network. Skeptik seems like the person who sees the glass as almost empty when everyone else sees it as half full. This is just an observation.

I see the glass as too big :D

Ok well let's go through this troublesome sentence.
"After his comments, we watched for him"
Notice the for in that string. It wasn't "We watched him" or "We traced him."

So from his comments they decided "Hey. We should watch out for this kind of data movement on our network." And they did. Easy neh?

That about it?
