I've got a dual sim phone with vodacom taking sim 1. I am considering telkom mobile as my sim 2 due to the following:

  • 1GB data
Free SMSs; WhatsApps and Instant Messaging
Free calls to Telkom mobile and Telkom landline numbers*
R0.70c per minute on calls to other SA mobile and landline networks
    Free WiFi at Telkom Hotspots

Can anyone provide some input on this? Are the teklom mobile to telkom mobile and telkom fixed line calls 100% free and are there any issues to be concerned about?

The Telkom Mobile to Telkom Mobile and Telkom Fixed Line calls are 100% as long as the landline number is serviced by Telkom. Should a number not go through when dialling, use this link to check which service provider the number belongs to https://www.porting.co.za/PublicWebsite/.

Calls will be charged if calling to a different Landline provider.

I've not experienced any issues with FreeMe.

Does the phone actually have the second sim available? Last dual sim phone I had from the scum at Vodacom they replaced the second sim's holder with a blank so a second sim could not be inserted...

Love it, but need to be able to dial all networks. So on the 20Gb deal.
The data is cool though, no (employer) internet at office.

Yes it does.. Its a Xiaomi phone and ive currently got two sim card in it. One only for data and the other for calls. Works wonderfully :)

Same setup this side, Xiaomi with dual (FreeMe 2GB) sims.

FreeMe works amazingly for me. One SIM on Telkom, the other roaming on MTN all the time. Data is switched when I hit the cap for a SIM.

I've about 500mins for Telkom calls. So always looking for landline numbers online when say needing to call companies and such.

MY mo'nice deals suck though, so looking at getting a better deal with another ISP for one of the sims.

Is there a way to block calling numbers other than telkom from such a sim? Usually I stick to topup contracts because I need to be sure I dont accidentally get a bill shock end of the month.

If you go with the freeme top up, you can only call to telkom numbers unless you topup with airtime. Or you go for the large freeme option, think 20gb then all calls included

The thing though is you can for some reason only get freeme topup with a sim alone, I also need a new phone and I cant afford one right now.... which is why I ask you see.

Other question though... how does the extras tranlate when roaming (on mtn networks I assume) because telkom mobile seems to only have coverage in city centres and a few large towns... my own piece of backwoods is uncovered.

The only difference is MTN data is 3G.

Hmmmm I wonder how fast/dependable such roaming is
If you set network to mtn and band at 3g you have coverage wherever mtn cover is and better battery than on telkom lte
Super dependable and great speeds

You misunderstand, I'm so far away from any kind of LTE none of that matters to me. My interest is in any possible degredation of quality of the "free" social media access or "free" telkom line calling.

Still free

Well yes but I mean in terms of quality and/or speed, telkom's track record makes me nervous.
