FreeNAS PC

You will need to check the specs on the Freenas site, but I've got it running on a Pentium 75.
Freenas supports samba, nfs, rsync and a a few others. I use samba so I connect to my shares using \\server\share

I know there are a couple of FreeNAS punters here (/me winks at beanie) and I'm looking for an old PC to run it. Will a P3 be fine? I'll get the full specs later, but that's all I know so far.

It'll be plenty, FreeNAS will run on just about anything :D

BTW, how will the FreeNAS system appear to the other computer's? As another hard drive? Obviously I have to choose how to set it up, but a "hard drive" is preferable. Also, can "retrieval" backups be run from the NAS?

It'll show as a networked PC if you enable CIFS, though you can use Windows' "Map Network Drive" feature so that it shows up as just another hard drive :)

:D:cool:

Not to hijack the thread but the other NAS is OpenFiler: http://www.openfiler.com/

I've got this setup at home and it works really well. The are some differences between OpenFiler and FreeNAS (one being FreeNAS is BSD while OpenFiler is linux). This article, http://linuxbsdos.com/2008/10/06/freenas-vs-openfiler/ , gives you a quick comparison.

Both will 'advertise' shares that you can then map a windows drive to.
