Hi there

I am posting here as i am assuming that if you know your way around the worl on Linux then my big Freenas frustration will be your little 5 min fixing solution.

I suspect my problem are linked to setting up and understanding file and folder permissions in a unix world(of which I know nothing - chmod is not part of my language) together with not understanding SMB/CIFS mixed with a touch of not understand mount points and the like on Freenas. I am not an idiot but feel t would be better to pay someone for their time to short cut the learning curve right now:)

Happy to pay for your time as long as you know what you are doing. Drop me a PM.

chmod sure can change permissions, but doesn't mean it will work for your windows shares. You need to convert those BSD permissions into Samba permissions. Easiest method is to make sure, whatever user on BSD it is assigned to, also exists in Samba. If not you need to match them, though I have no idea how FreeNAS implemented this or if they even added patches on top of Samba.

Lastly, I might be completely wrong, I know what FreeNAS is, however never used it.

What does /etc/samba/smbusers look like?

What is the user the files on the filesystem belong to? And what account are you trying to share it to? Also are you at a smallbusiness or at home? Some more info could help :)

Some more info..

I have using Freenas for about 3/4 years now.

Hardware 4 500gb in a raid 5 config. 2 gigs rams(becuase it was cheap) E2180 processor, imbedded version installed on flash drive.

Software side:Running latest version((0.7.1 Shere (revision 5127))
The current CIFS setup is one share and everyone connects to it . Was really simple and had no issues. I now what to implement multiple shares and have different users restricted to different shares. This i need help with. Have looked at the user guides etc but dont have enough time to figure it all out so looking to pay someone to do it and learn from them at the same time.
