I was listening to John Matham's show on Cape Talk at around 5pm on the 21/10/2009. They were discussing SPAM from Vodacom, including a particularly irritating one about Free News4U. People were saying the 'STOP' system wasn't effective.

Towards the end of the programme, someone sent in a message saying that the Direct Marketing Association told him one could opt-out of getting messages in general by sending STOP to 30699. Since I've been getting all sorts of messages and have resorted to blocking them, I would try it.

I sent the message at around 17:45. I then received a confirmation late in the evening saying ""Your News4U Opt out request was processed successfully."

Now today I received my first SPAM from News4U!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It would appear that the 30699 STOP number was for News4U and actually using it had the opposite effect.

Question is where did they get your number from ?

i was given the option to remove the NEWS4U option for you guys

Also got SMS spam from Vodacom earlier this week - something about a Summer Promotion.

This after already requesting not to be spammed by the network.

Is this related to a message I got from them:

Dear Customer, please be advised that we deregistered you from future Summer Promotion SMS messages from Vodacom. Kind regards, Vodacom Customer Care...

Now I'm concerned that this only applies to one message - the one you mention.
