Hi all

I'm having a problem that's driving me crazy. My PC keeps freezing every 15 minutes or so for about 30 secs each time then returns to normal. I've scoured the web for answers, but to no avail. I've tried de-fragging, disk clean, all sorts of scans and updated all my drivers.

My PC is fairly old only 2 gigs of RAM and 512 mb video memory.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

You might be having a cooling problem on yo PC. Check if the PC is not overheating.

The quickest way to check if the problem is hardware or software is to download an ubuntu desktop live disk, boot off it and to see if you can run it for a few hours without problems. That will usually confirm if your problem is hardware or software.

@Killadoob - deleting start up programs didn't help sux.
@Sapphiron - sounds like a mission, isn't there a diagnostic tool I could download to help me ?

Since it freezes every 15 minutes you should be able to check in task manager if something is causing the high CPU, memory or disk writes that might cause the system to behave that way and what process is doing it.

If not the above it could be hardware related. Any unusual hardware on the system you can disable in device manager or unplug.

Otherwise since it is Windows and you say it is an old machine I would reinstall Windows from scratch or at least do a repair.

How old is your harddrive?

Could be a read error(bad sector/cluster) on your hdd (maybe where the page file is?) which could occur on a fairly old pc, do a surface scan of your hard drive

Does the problem start within 15min from start up or only a lil later?

Only a bit later. I've cleaned it a bit, and that seems to have helped a lot (fans are sounding louder and I think the freezing has stopped). Gonna buy some compressed air and finish the job and hope that solves it.

@Nameite - about 4 years, thanks will give that a try.

Also, check in control panel, event viewer for any system errors or warnings.

Dusted it thoroughly with compressed air - seems to have fixed the problem :). Thanks for the replies.

Could be dirt then. It is still best advised to keep an eye on things as fans could be on their way out. Still don't rule out software problems but does tend to point more in a hardware direction.
