Fridge Compressor Always Running

 Sorry Viking! It was off for about 90mins. But there might be other factors at play here, which will render our test invalid:
  • The temperature in your home (specifically kitchen)
  • The amount of times you open the door, and for how long.
  • The amount of stuff you have in your fridge
  • ...
Also, how will we ever find out if your fridge is actually running abnormally long? Like you said: it used to run less, but how do we determine if it is still in an acceptable range? How do we measure this? I think only the "cooler" guys might know more on that.

Off for 90 min .is too short in my opinion. But I might be wrong.... Anyways I need to find a gap to time the thing somehow.

I think I'm gonna start with the thermostat. Will open the parts that can be opened and see what it uses. Haven't had the time yet to time the off and on times.

The reason I got the fridge so cheap was that the actual electronics popped with the recent load shedding. They guy tried to bypass it but couldn't get it right. I had a chap come in and do a proper check and they found the thermostat that was replaced was actually faulty or of and incorrect spec. My guy replaced it and I taped the probe to the back of the fridge inside and it works like a charm now. R450 labour and a R180 component.

I have changed many thermostats on old fridges. They relatively cheap as you said. This one I can't see where the thermostat is unless it is in the light cover or use a different system.

Is it possible for you to time this, so I can compare it to mine?
Also: A fridge tech told me once that some models don't have a thermostat. The dial is more of a timer. How true this is, I dunno.
Then how would you control temperature with a timer? Automatic regulation requires some sort of feedback mechanism; Input, sensing device, error correction, output = rinse and repeat. I don't see how a timer can control/regulate this.

Put a couple of big pieces of ice, like a big ice cream tub in it and see if it still does the same.

We missed an important step (I think):
Where is your temperature set at? Mine is just over 2 (max is 5) Temp.jpg

I was quoted R2350 (VAT inclusive) to replace the compressor in my Samsung fridge/freezer, I asked if the price was for a new compressor or reconditioned and did not get a proper answer, so I'm assuming it is for a reconditioned compressor.

What price should I expect for a reconditioned compressor versus a new compressor?

Unless it's a very expensive fridge, I'd buy a new fridge for that. New compressor is basically a new fridge

@Meelperd you still waiting for the fridge to switch on?  :p

Since I started to defrost my freezer more regularly the fridge is off most of the times and the compressor doesn't run all the time anymore. I basically don't allow for ice to build up in the freezer anymore as it seems to have big impact on the compressor.

You need to work out a schedule to suit your fridge by trail and error. There is no FB loop, so you have to become that loop until you find the right on/off ratio. It is a temp solution at best.
