So for the past 3 years the fastest I every downloaded something was 40kB/s and finally decided to upgrade as my exchange supports 10MB. I phoned Telkom and 10mins later my router is sync at 6144kbps. :D :D

Will I ever be able to go back? :p

Question, those with 10MB lines, at what is your routers syncing?

I can only imagine what the upgrade must be like.

Indeed I am, although it has only been 20mins or so! lol

Mine is 6144/640 kbps.

Would they have started at 10MB and adjusted it downward?

Yes. Until it stabilised.

You can try your luck and ask them to push it up, but results are not guaranteed.

It is hard to go back! Mine was unstable at 6Mpbs and i called them (and was very nice to them) to ask if we could test it at 5. Solid at this speed. I got a new ADSL2+ modem and phoned again to bump it up to 6/7 - but it was still only stable at 5.

My experience with the support guys was great during that upgrade process.

Enjoy!

I called Telkom a couple of times last month, they told me my line wasn't capable of 4Mbs, but to keep checking in. I called them yesterday, suddenly my exchange supports it, and this morning I was zooming along on my Telkom local at 402kbs :)

I'm so happy.

Maybe a stupid question but even if your line syncs at 10MB aren't you still throttled (not sure if that's the right word) to 4Mbps by your ISP ??

All depends on the ISP in question and if your package you are paying for is 4Mbps or 10Mbps

Sweet dude, they said my exchange only supports up to 512kbps, but I insisted on an upgrade.

Yes, currently I am using a local account, the speed isn't limited. If you bought a 384kbps uncapped package, that would be limited.

I upgraded to 4096 from 384 while I still had an MWEB 384k uncapped product and it ran at much faster speeds at times. Cheating, i know... But I didn't abuse it thank goodness.

Aaah, ok. I wasn't aware there was 10Mbps packages available from ISPs other than Telkom.

Has anyones speed dropped due to the upgrades? Mine has. Went from a stable 2.5 meg to 1.8meg. My stats are
Down up
DSL Noise Margin: 12.5 dB 13.7 dB
DSL Attenuation: 44.5 dB 25.0 dB
DSL Transmit Power: 17.0 dBm 5.9 dBm

Mine hasn't gone down yet, a few disconnects. Maybe 5-6 per day, but I'll rather take that, than a lower speed.

Upstream 640 kbps
Downstream 6144 kbps
SNR Margin (Upstream) 12.0 db
SNR Margin (Downstream) 9.0 db
Line Attenuation (Upstream) 26.0 db
Line Attenuation (Downstream) 48.5 db

I moved from the UK recently, was getting 20Mb in Brighton... down to 384kb here..... I REALLY want to upgrade, but it is expensive still.
