I'm using filezilla to ftp into a linux server running vsFTP 2.05
I can login, but am unable to list files or change directory below ftp root level.
The server response is: Retrieving directory listing.... and then times out.

The problem only occurs on my afrihost connection with ftp gui clients (i've tried 3 different ones)
On all of my other client's servers, I have no ftp issues with afrihost.
But, everything works fine in filezilla when I'm using my 3g tethered connection.
The dos ftp client also seems to work on the afrihost connection but i really don't want to use that or my 3g bandwidth.

I've faffed around with active and passive in the ftp client and tweaked every setting I could see. I also turned my firewall off. I don't really know enough about ftp to diagnose this properly. I don't think the host is much help technically either.

Anybody here got some ideas?

Are you accessing the same folder from both locations, it could be that you accessing a write only folder from your side so it won't list the files... Or maybe your account only has write access, just make sure it has both read & write access

What type of server are you connecting to? If it's a Linux based VPS then you / the VPS owner need to adjust the PASSIVE ports to a high number, normally on 5000-51000 or something like that. This is normally a problem with fire walling and setting the PASSIVE to a high number like this normally solves the problem. Afrihost probably filters the lower PASSIVE ports so this will fix it in their case.
