Good Day

We finally got Telkom as a provider to our estate, not the best but something in the end :) So now its the whole ISP part and looking for a solution to our problems. Can anyone point us to some good uncapped providers for Telkom based FTTH. We have to begin from scratch with this FTTH stuff and packages. I did search but nothing stable came up.

Thanks Guys.

Depends on your Fibre speed, but generally good and uncapped do not go in the same sentence, unless you willing to pay through your arse. Anywhere from R1564 (20MB) to R2648 (100MB) from WA: https://www.webafrica.co.za/fibre/

True we generally open to anything as we currently on R1700 for a 10mb so something on the same line, same price is a advantage.

If you like high speed stay away from uncapped - far better to go for somethings like a 100Mbps line with a 1tb cap or whatever you require.

That's still decent. I'm just talking in regards to not having a petty limit on them. I can find anyone who does such a high cap on a Telkom based Fibre line.

You can use most ADSL products on Telkom FTTH.

Forgive the silly question but how would ADSL accounts work with Fibre. So telkom lays the fibre and you have an option of the ISPs they allow - vox, webafrica etc. Each of these have a similar price from what I have seen.

I have not seen fibre without data packages or how ADSL accounts can be used

AFAIK Telkom FTTH always comes with a data add-on.

What folks do is to take the Telkom fibre line with the smallest Capped product available (iirc it is 10GB). Then they select their ISP of choice, eg. Afrihost, MWeb, Crystal Web, Web Africa, etc. for the bulk usage data account (eg. uncapped).

So that is currently the only solution people with Fibre provided by Telkom have at the moment ?

Unless it has recently changed and OpenServe now offers a wholesale fibre product, yes.

Obviously they could simply use another Telkom ISP account but they tend to be more expensive, especially if you have high usage.

Openserve offer Telkom FTTH on wholesale. So as ISPs we can offer the product without Telkom data. If you get your fibre direct from Telkom ISP, then yes they will bind you to a lengthy contract with data as it currently stands. If you get it from your ISP, like Crystal Web, no such requirements are imposed unless the ISP elects to do so. Which Crystal Web doesn't...

One wonders why no article has been forthcoming from Mybroadband.co.za around this all, as people appear mightily confused...

Thanks for some clarification. I guess we are a bit let in the dark with this. I'm going to paste the updates we have got from our estate.

Update 1:
Fibre to the home :The contract has been concluded with Telkom and the project is underway together with their sub-contractors. Packages and availability dates will be communicated in due course; a comprehensive infrastruc-ture assessment is currently underway to determine whether any changes will be required

Update 2:
Telkom have awarded the contract to lay the fibre optic cables to Huawei who are awaiting wayleave approval from City Council to commence work inside the road reserves of the estate. Once this has been obtained accu- rate timelines for delivery will be drawn up. Residents information evenings will be held in due course to inform residents of the options available and to answer questions.

Update 3: Flyer

I have a question. If Telkom installed the Fibre lines in the estate must you rent the line from them? Or can I rent the line from CW? If yes, will the prices be similar?

I think the idea of DJ's posts is to indicate that you shouldn't actually rent from Telkom because they tie you into lengthy and unnecessary contracts. Getting your line through CrystalWeb or ISPAfrika will actually be way cheaper than getting it through Telkom.

My advice: do a side-by-side comparison of the multiple ISPs that offer this already, which suits your data habits.
