I have been waiting for 4 years to get fibre in my street and the trenching has just started outside since last week. I thought I should document the progress so others may benefit from the timelines from trenching in the street to actual fibre going live in a home. SADV is the installer of the backbone and they are trenching on the verges outside. They are not cutting across driveways but are horizontal directional drilling (boring) under the driveway which saves time and money in reinstating driveways.

We noticed the contractor's vans on the street on 11th of August. The next day they handed out flyers, marked and netted the verges and then the trenching started. I will document as much as possible.

Edit: please note that cm was changed to mm in the posts below in reference to trench depths.

Th trenches dug are 600mm deep. See below the the pics and the HDD boring under the driveway.

SADV laid our cables end of February/March this year before Covid hit. Was able to pre-order fibre bout +-3weeks ago, just waiting for them to phone and arrange a day to install. Good luck with your progress, and keep us updated.

Awesome! Keep us up to date.

I've been running the FTTH campaign for our neighbourhood over the last 6 months and finally have someone who will start trenching in the next 2 weeks.

Perhaps completely unrelated, but I noticed at the corners of most streets, holes got dug and then covered again with sand when I walked the dog just now. Probably nothing to do with Fibre but who knows, this is all new to me.

I hope I don't have to wait as long but will keep you updated. I am considering trenching in my yard now so when they install the buddy box on the boundary I can perhaps convince them to install it in position at the point where I require it. I have to ask if this is possible, might save some time when it comes to the actual ISP install of the ONT.

Good luck with your progress, I wonder about holes at the corners of the streets, I'm learning as we go along. Hopefully someone else can elaborate.
 
Interesting log of the progress, keep it going!

These are the pitfalls of this game damage to water pipes and electric feeds. The assumption is that at 600 mm, the fibre will be above any water and electrical reticulation but in fact, it seldom is because the council does not stick to its own rules.

And under-the-road/driveway drilling does not perchance end up hitting a rock or going through some or other service.

Any idea what they are planning to do at the boundary fence? Are they terminating the UG fibre in a box on the fence? What are you then going to do from there to the house? Are they allowing you to influence where they put those boxes and maybe get them to take the fibre direct to a box on your house instead?

I think they perhaps have an idea to terminate the box on the verge somehow but I'm actually not sure. My plan is to trench in the yard and get them to terminate on my wall outside my current router setup. I am going to try and influence that outcome. I'll keep updating my progress. I have inspected quite a few trenches and the water and electrical feed cables are all exposed so the municipality is certainly not conforming to their own ordinance.
 
What is disappointing is the mount of rubble below the surface in these developed areas! Now, where does it comes from?
From the developers when they build the houses?
Or, are those areas all on top of old rubbish dumps that have been bulldozed flat?
makes one think!
 
Hi so I spoke to SADV the other day just to find out when they expecting fibre to go live. They said they expecting 27 November. But from that documents, as above, it said 8-10 weeks. So I queried about the delay they said that sometimes due to trenching issues or not enough labour. This is just a temporary date so it may decrease or increase. .
 
Can we query our ward councilor to start that WhatsApp group sooner. As I would also like my ISP to install my line in my house before fibre goes live just so that on day 1 I get access.
 
I think they going to have a termination box outside each property. That's why they digging small holes near each house.
