FTTH vs ADSL prices

FTTH >> 2 million mortgage for house in one of the select gated communities + 1k for fibre
ADSL >> 800 bucks

/thread

Or stated differently...this whole "fibre to selected commercial residential developments" trend is not FTTH.

so do the prices show the whole amount or is that just for the data or line usage as the residents stated they pay for 3 different things?

2 bar for a house in Waterfall or Midstream is a bargain. Waterfall an empty stand is 1.5million, Midstream Ridge is 1.2...

In South Africa, competition can be defined as:

Increasing your prices slightly above that of your competitor, so that it appears as if there is no collusion and so that your prices are not exactly the same.

If MTN and Telkom's prices were exactly the same, the Competition Commission might just lift one eyebrow, and then go back to sleep.

How does the fibre to the gated community work? Do they lay fibre just to the estate and from that point they also lay fibre to each house? Or do they go and lay some fibre to the estate and then from there use copper to connect everyone to that?

The estate I am looking at has the fibre to your plot. You then just have to get connected from there. I don't know how yet though (If you have to use the builder or Smart Village directly). SmartVillage is the only option there, but the prices aren't too bad.

Just because it doesn't run to your house, doesn't mean it isn't FTTx

Interesting figures we have there. One issue though, VDSL and ADSL isn't available country wide either. VDSL is only available in selected areas. ADSL is all over, but there is a lot of places without any ADSL still.

What happens when you hit limit? MTN are billing you at out of bundle rates, even though it is fixed line...

Well, we can't expect anything else from them, can we? OOB is a viable business for the mobile operators, so getting rid of OOB will hurt them financially.

Let's not forget that with ADSL you never actually get the speed you paying for... our office 10mbps line isn't capable to maintaining 4mbps speeds(yes I downgraded)... hopefully fibre doesn't suffer the same issue! Guess it depends on backhaul congestion.

nothing worth it here, wont be anywhere soon to normal ppl in suburbs

Fibre offers a big advantage when the uplink speed equals the downlink. This is useful for server hosting, people working on big projects, video conferencing etc.

(good for the operator too - someone leaves their torrent running briefly and the next thing other people have sucked big files off their system and used up their caps. Serves them right.)

It is fiber to your house and you have a special router that handles the fiber.
