Full tank vs first click

If you look from the side when the pump is running, you can see a little fuel vapour escaping. You would probably need an open flame or cigarette in close proximity to ignite it, but the vapour is extremely flammable, so I wouldn't test it.

Sample size of 1. Just because it hasn't happened, doesn't mean that it can't.

Essentially though, it's just a precaution. When my starter motor was playing up a while back, I refuelled with the engine running, and no-one complained, although that was a diesel.
You can't light diesel unless it's under pressure. So you'll be safe anyways.

Seems most people here are first clickers.
I have a VW, so they can activate the air valve thingie to fill to the brim. Always do it, have been for years, never had any issues.
I don't worry about fuel expansion / evaporation because I seldom, if ever fill up and then don't drive for at least 10 minutes after. I figure that'll make enough space.

BTW, on my old VW Polo Playa and my newer Polo Vivo, the fuel between autostop (first click) and "nearly overflowing" gives me about 100km. Sometimes more. Which is a lot if you drive around for work, as it means you don't have to fill up quite so frequently (easily 1 less fill-up per 3 or 4 weeks, depending on your driving habits. Probably make a bigger difference for the OP, who fills up every 2 - 3 days!)

Anyone with a Tata Indica having problems with the auto stop?

I always filled my Fiat Palio to the first stop, but the Tata seems to have the auto stop kick in almost straight away. Yesterday it took less than a litre before stopping. It then took ,19l before stopping again, about what I had expected.

It's happened to me a few times now. The Tata is designed with a neck restrictor for unleaded fuel, which I use. It could be the attendant, I fill up at the same garage most of the time and often get the same guy.

I once told the PA to "fill it up with red 95" and went inside to the shop. When I checked my fuel gauge it
read 3/4 full. I queried this and was told the nozzle "clicked" off.

Since then I do it this way.

Car takes 65l to fill.

I drive till the reserve light comes on. That means I've used 55l.

At the garage I say to the petrol attended ......... "Type in 55l - red 95"

He types in 55l on the keypad and that's that.

No over / under filling.

What do you drive that you still use lead replacement petrol? Many stations have stopped stocking it these days.
