are you sure that you want to buy a laptop and not just upgrade your current pc? The if you compare the separate laptop parts, it will all be more expensive than their pc counter parts.

Also If I were you, I would not worry about Gsync or freesync. I'm not sure how new you are to gaming and how your screen refresh rates work, but if you get 144fps or above in the games you play then you will be able to get to use the 144hz refresh rate of your screen. In other words you can just set your graphics lower and you will be able to have a more smooth experience. Also the difference between 144hz and 165hz is super small in my opinion and not worth the hassle.

My monitor is a Dell S2721DGFA it has a 165 Hz but can only run 60 Hz with my current laptop. So i am playing on getting a new gaming laptop with a Gefore RTX 4050. G sync allows you to get a variable refresh rate so i will get a higher refresh rate than 60Hz
Just to be clear - G-sync / Freesync are not at all required to attain higher refresh rates. As far as I can tell, the important thing for you here is the higher refresh rate, not necessarily the variable refresh rate (although of course you will want to make sure the tech is available if upgrading).

Also, FYI - your issue with 60Hz is quite possibly the cable you are using (depending on the HDMI output of your current laptop, which is probably an older version, and will in that case not handle that resolution) - you need to make sure you are using an HDMI 2 > to test this, but if you are upgrading, not a huge issue.

The crux of it is this - you should be able to attain 1440p @ 144Hz via HDMI (will not do 165). Do not waste your time trying to get variable refresh rate tech via HDMI - it will - under specific conditions - work, but really not worth the hassle. That said, it does look like it's possible, but here are a lot of people struggling with this issue (with your particular monitor); looks like there may have been an update that allows 144Hz @ 1440, but it is not 100% clear that this will also support variable refresh rates.

Make sure you are using an HDMI 2.0 cable for whatever you do (obviously).

Also, there are adaptors that convert USB-C output to Display Port, however, I have no idea if VRR will work if you do this.

Basically, if you are upgrading your laptop, try to find one that has a DP output - this will solve all of your issues.

i found a laptop that i am looking into buying, here is the link
I am relatively new to pc gaming so i dont know much about it but i might try to see if i have a hdmi 2.1 cable abd try it out. But i am pretty sure with this new laptop it should support VRR. Luckiliy this laptop has a DP port so i can use it to gain 165 Hz instead of 144 Hz

How would i go about upgrading my current pc as i cant get a new graphics card becuase it is built in so i would need an external gpu which is not worth the price. If i sometimes lower my screen resolution i at most get like around 75HZ but a 654*326 which is really unusable. Also i cant replace my CPU as it is built into the motherboaord

So, I would not personally buy from Evetech (I have not had a bad experience, I have just had 100% positive interactions with): Wootware; just taking a quick look there are options like this one, which seems to have everything you are looking for (obviously look at reviews and various options).

Thanks so much. This one really does look much better , so when it says USB-C supports G sync will it work with a USB-C cable only.

So i can use a normal HDMI cable or do i need to use HDMI 2.1 because my new gaming laptop will come with one

You are going to be playing at 1080p. A 2.0 cable is probably fine.

My Monitor is a Dell S2721DGFA

Yup, it's on the list. Just drop the "A" - S2721DGF

Seems like a decent laptop, and it has a HDMI 2.1 port, as expected - https://www.asus.com/laptops/for-gaming/tuf-gaming/asus-tuf-gaming-f15-2023/techspec/

Buy the one that has the best value for money.

If the price difference is negligible, buy the one that has the best performance/ZAR

These are low end mobile GPUs. A small fraction of games are going to run close to a locked 144hz, let alone 165hz.

Okay thanks. I am pretty sure for my purposes it should be able to run 165Hz as it is a very low CPU strain game. Also what i noticied is when i connected another laptop to my monitor it gets a higher refresh rate. So i think its the laptops graphics card that is bad and is not supporting higher refresh rate

Look at actual real benchmarks AND the settings used, for the games you want to play, on a 3050 noteboo (not the marketing brochure with is likely for the top-spec model in that range)
If you are happy playing low/medium settings, then great.

I am quite happy playing with meduim settings not low. There is this fps calculator i found at it says with the current GPU i want to use i should get around 300 fps is that good?

If you want to be able to use the full 165hz you need to get atleast 165fps. 300fps is more than enough, you wont be able to see the difference between 300fps and 165fps.

While you won’t see more than the 165fps on screen because of the refresh rate, going higher will also make gameplay smoother if your GPU can manage it.
Does smoother gameplay help you be a better gamer

This is an age old meme in the gaming community, debated over many years. Everyone has their own take on this, but I feel it is sort of unanimous among the real greasy gamers that if you are a professional gamer (aka you get paid money to play for at least 8hours a day) any little bit could help them get an edge over their competition. I personally think it really does not matter once you get to those types of high frame rates and that 99% of people won't notice unless their frames drop under 144fps.

So it does in a way
