This game was TRULY EPIC, I probably replay this ever 4-5 years hehe....

I have never played the CD Version though =[
 
I played Beast Within and I really enjoyed that back in the day.

I heard the third one wasn't as good as the second but I haven't heard much about the first one.

Might just download it and have a look for myself :)
 
I played the 3rd installment. It was fairly entertaining. Loved the peaceful music in this game and how it actually made you feel as if you were there yourself, very immersive. Something which is indeed lacking from moderm games. Other puzzle games I can remember playing werd: zork nemesis, freddie the fish, full throttle, shivers, riven, zork grand inquisitor, goosebumps, blade runner, myst. Only ever finished one game and only after help of a walkthrough after 2years of suffering (grand inquisitor and gk3)
 
It would have been nice to could play the old police quest or similar DOS puzzle games, unfortunately dos games gave me a head ache and nausia. Im a big enthusiast of old games and believe that good games rarely needs to have good gfx, its just a bonus!

But I found myself wanting games to atleast adhere to using 256 colors and operate at 640x480 pixels or better. was/am I a snob? :(

Gabriel Knight best adventure game series ever :) . Just keep in mind though, every sequel was using a totally different technology . So the first one is like a Sierra King's Quest kind of game, the 2nd one is the one with the full motion video and real actors and the 3rd one is full 3d engine . However no matter what tech they used, the stories carried this series so high, it didn't matter how awkward the gameplay might be.

Thing is, the stories in these games are similar to a Dan Brown ala "Da Vinci Code" book and they were made long before those books. Play the 3rd game , for the story it is amazingly intriguing ;-)

Jane Jensen who wrote the Gabriel Knight series, latest game out is this one : Gray Matter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nt5Tx5SbGsw . It's on Xbox and PC, if you want some puzzle/adventure on the console. Seems to have a bit of a Fringe theme....

Gabriel Knight 3, I wish I finished that game. But the puzzle elements started getting way too crazy, and there's actually some articles on that as well. It's around that time that adventure games stepped out of the limelight.

I should perhaps give it a bash again with a walkthru, if only to experience the story. I have it on GOG, so should make a plan!

Loved all the Gabriel Knight games, story line and voice acting made the first the best for me. GK1 probably ties Grim Fandango as the most enjoyable adventure games I have ever played.

Honourable mentions to King's Quest 6 and Full Throttle.
 
Mark Hammil did the voice of Mosely in the first Gabriel Knight game. Tim Curry did the voice of Gabriel Knight in the first and third game.

Indeed. The thing with Tim Curry is he got a very sarcastic kind of tone , which alot of people hated, but i personally liked it. It added alot of humour when Gabriel is thinking to himself :).

Oh definitely, I really liked his voice. Took a bit getting used to the life-action actor for the second Gabriel Knight...

Ah ok, thanks for clearing that up, I knew Mark Hammil was involved somehow, but I've not played the game so I'd not known he wasn't the protagonist.
