That thread contains the same warning:

DO NOT wipe data, perform a factory reset, or reformat partitions from recovery after installing the XXLQ2 firmware

Best to make sure people know that they take a risk before they flash. If he does brick his unit, you can say he was warned.

Would say it depends on where you got your Note from. Not sure if Vodacom have released or not.

Did my note through the FNB offer, had Turkish firmware and I managed to update about 3 weeks ago. Took a couple of attempts but all legit.

Battery drain was noticeable, but after a few days running till empty and charging back up again it is almost back to normal again. Get the official ICS from SamMobile if you really want to flash via Odin.

I also have a Note from FNB. How did you get the ICS update? Kies does not provide an update.

I would also like to know. My Note arrived at 8am this morning from FNB, haven't had time to open it and check which version and region is loaded.... I believe the UK version of ICS on Sammobile is a good one, until such a time that it's released on Kies. I'll have to wait until July to flash new ROMS and stuff(7-day return policy thingie...), unless Samsung SA releases the official ICS through Kies before then...

My Note Currently as per the instructions I linked earlier:

And yes, my Note is one of those susceptible to hard bricking (Search Play Store for the "Got Brickbug?" app to check) or get it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1115293&d=1339163352

Cool man.... Tell me, hows the performance increase of ICS over GB...? I'm yet to start my Note up and go through the setups, but just for interest sake... I know on the S2, there's about a 30-40% increase in performance. I wondered what the increase is for the Note...

I used the UK rom from SamMobile and it loaded without any problems using Odin. Huge plus for me is that I now have direct/full USB thumb-drive access without rooting. Just plug it in and move stuff around at will.

yeah when I did my ICS, the UK one had not been released ... would have been easier for me too, but its only the language that needs changing in Dr Ketan's release guide.

SO whats the fix for this bug seeing as its part of the official releases. Was very close to doing a Factory Reset the other day when I cocked up one of the prop files.

Anyone know how to BUY PS Touch for the Note.

Found a five finger discount copy but its old and personally would prefer to buy it, all my droid software is strait up legit other than this.
Seems retarded that I have to resort to steeling for no other reason than the seller does not want to sell it to me.

To be honest, when I read this sort of warning, I tend to shy away. I paid R8000 for mine and can't afford to brick it.

I'm not an expert, and maybe you should better do some deep research, particularly XDA-DEV on the subject. As I understand it, the issue affects certain chip types.

Goto Android Market (Google Play) and download a free app called emmc brickbug check (or just search brickbug).

This tells you if you have the suspect chip. If you do, and upgrade to any of those firmware versions, then you are warned not to do any of those operations, that can potentially brick your Note.

Again, as I understand it, the problem occurs when a certain 'unsafe' chipset and certain 'unsafe' firmware version come together.

Hopefully some other readers can explain this better than me.

Tell me then, I've read all those threads about bricking your device. Fair enough, Samsung didn't intend for users to use the recovery mode to factory reset.... Bit what about resting from within the settings of the phone, and not from recovery...? Surely that way shouldn't be a problem....?

From XDA:

Don't do a wipe/factory reset, don't do a Nandroid restore with an unsafe kernel, and ESPECIALLY don't flash anything in CWM with an unsafe kernel.

Chainfire's latest CF-Root kernels should render wiping and Nandroid restores safe by disabling the trigger conditions in the recovery binary, but it is not possible to render ZIP flashing safe in this manner. (The ZIP itself contains the binary that does the format operation.)

I'm sure most newer kernels have been appropriately patched to no longer be unsafe. But best bet would be to check the kernel thread.

Flash Abyssnote Redpill kernel between ROMS and don't wipe or backup with CWM on unsafe kernel and you will be fine.

I have flashed loads of ICS ROMS with no issues at all. Just follow the above and all will be good.

Wait for a local operator... bleh...

Just read the complete warning on XDA, CWM is not the only cause at least 3 bricks have been confirmed as completely unrelated to CWM, one of which was a user who had no CWM installed, stock kernal and did a factory reset from within the settings menu, they basically warn against using anything even related to recovery, custom or otherwise. Only 2 kernels have been confirmed safe and the affected user pool at this moment is pretty small.

Realistically only users who really mess around with their phones would be affected, general daily use without custom roms and kernals is unlikely to result in a need to reset the phone. Read no warning about an odin flash, everything was related to recovery and odin uses download mode. Safest if anything goes wrong would then be to re-install the rom using odin as apposed to doing a factory reset, especially if its a system related problem, that way you would at least keep your applications and their data/settings which is what I did when I messed up my build.prop file.

So does anyone have any more info regarding ICS and its "release" date?
I know i can flash it with a different countrys firmware but i think ill wait.

I checked an earlier email and got the date wrong. It was actually supposed to be today, but after checking Kies just now, looks like Samsung internally is giving out information to the service centres that is not reliable. But perhaps the information was provided off the record.

Disappointing!

On flashing the ROM yourself - I saw this warning today. So you better do a **** load of research before you DIY:

http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-note-n7000-android-4-0-3-xxlq2-95823/

Warning

Very important note: Just like firmware versions XXLPY, ZSLPF, and DXLP9, this current firmware (XXLQ2) carries the same huge bug (according to testers’ reports), with the potential to damage your SD card and brick your Galaxy Note if you wipe data, do a factory reset, or reformat partitions from recovery. So, to protect your device DO NOT wipe data, perform a factory reset, or reformat partitions from recovery after installing the XXLQ2 firmware.

According to reports on XDA forum, they do suggest not to flash to ICS, as the SuperBrick bug is present on custom/stock firmwares, and there are more than one way to brick your device. Yes, they do warn against wiping data and factory resetting, but that is more advanced features of the software. As to when our networks will release the firmware, I think we still in for a bit of a wait, as it's only last month that the first ICS firmwares were released. So it should be some time still. However, I won't get too excited and hold my breathe that we'll get ICS over kies anytime soon, as our networks might decide to wait with the release of ICS until such a time that Samsung themselves fix the brick bug.... But who know, I could be wrong....

The date given to me some weeks ago was the 22nd but that came & went. :erm:

The source was a service agent. I did ask if he had any further news, but he said that when it comes to a multi-national like Samsung, good-luck trying to get a committed delivery date. :whistling: He did say he would let me know if he hears owt.

I'll live with Gingerbread until they roll out ICS. After all, with this super-brick bug unresolved, if something goes wrong with the ICS they finally release in ZA, I can expect Samsung to repair my Note if the unit gets bricked using the official firmware release.
