My screen cracked yesterday whilst it was in my pocket. Not sure how, maybe I bumped into a table or something but it wasn't anything extreme or I would've checked my phone right away for damage..
Got the phone for only 2 weeks. Went to the Virgin Mobile store that I signed up with and they said that there's nothing they can do. Phone is unusable. Will have to pay in 2-3k for a screen repair in order to keep the warranty. Told them there's no point in preserving a warranty that is of no use.
So I'm going to repair it by myself or by a third party. Anybody else have cracked screens and got it repaired?

Ouch dude. Sorry about that. The Galaxy S has a Super AMOLE display. Might be a bit tricky trying to have it through your own channels. Rather have them fix it I would say - and at least you'll retain your warranty.

If you can source one from the net, it should set you back about 1000 rands with shipping.

Well this is the second case of the screen breaking while being carried in somebody's pants pocket that I've heard of.(other person is also a forumite here)

This is actually the third one I've heard of on the mybroadband forum....

Eish! sorry to hear that.

But: the warranty does not cover you against physical damage. That's called insurance. You can't buy a microwave and crack the screen and expect them to repair it under warranty.
I think you should let them repair it and preserve your warranty in case you need it.

Sure, but the fact that there seems to be quite a few of them that have had this problems seems to indicate poor build quality in the sense that it seems that the body can flex enough to break the screen. That of course doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the warranty on the phone although it does somewhat relate more the phone having this problem rather than the owner being negligent. Either way insurance on the phone seems like a good idea considering it's fragile nature.

True.

Guess that's why my iPhone 3G is still going strong after 2 years and 2 months. Just wasn't impressed with the cheap plastics used in the Galaxy S. And now it's showing.

Couldn't care less about the plastic tbh BUT when it affects the phones actual performance and durability then it becomes a rather pressing issue.

If I were to sell the phone as is with the cracked screen about how much would it fetch?

Sympathies.

I have been trying to find a suitable pouch or case for mine with no luck yet.

Yep, I checked on ebay last night for a screen replacement. Can get one on ebay from a top-rated seller for around 80 pounds. So will work out to around R1000 with shipping. If I can get it repaired here in Cape Town for R1500 or less then I'd rather got that route. But if it's going to cost over 2k (and it most porbably will be) then I'm defnitely importing.

I knew it was plastic but damn, broken screen after a few DAYS? :wtf:

My cuzzy is intending on buying this sumsung cellphone, I shall point him to this thread :erm:

I agree with that guy who shall remain Unnamed, lets see some pics!
