Hi,

My Samsung Galaxy S4 constantly loses service. It often happens when I am in the middle of a call, but it also happens when I'm not even using it, at least several times a day. When it happens, signal and data signal disappears and is replaced by a no entry sign icon which pops up in the top right of the screen.

So far I have played around with rebooting the phone, switching between GSM and WCDMA, as well as automatically selecting an operator and manually selecting one ... so far a combination of these efforts has done nothing to fix the issue.

I am a Vodacom subscriber in central Cape Town. Has anyone else experienced this and do you know how to fix it? Vodacom says its not a network issue. Please help. Thanks.

Try this, take out the sim. clean it a bit, also the metal contacts in the phone. Use an earbud + meth spirit.

Sometimes when the metal contacts gets dirty this might happens.

Also try with a different sim, like MTN or Cell C.

Otherwise try flashing the ROM or upgrade it to the latest.

If all that fails, send it back for repairs and try stay away from Samsung in future <-- just my opinion :D

Sony Xperia here

also vodacom

not as bad as your description, but my phone regularly loses connection to the network in specific spots (same spots) so I'm inclined to think it's the network not the phone

Thanks for the tips. Further to above - what is the difference between GSM and WCDMA? Is there a particular one I should be using?

Thanks you. In addition - do you know the difference between GSM and WCDMA? Is there a particular one I should be using? As you can probably tell I am a bit useless with getting this kind of stuff. Hopefully by asking questions here I will improve

Others will give you much more detailed defintions, but my lay definition is:

GSM = slow data throughput = better battery life = fine for whatsapp, forum browsing via TapaTalk - NOT FINE for web browsing
WCDMA = fast data = worse battery life than GSM only = use if you browse internet on your phone

My phone is set to GSM only most of the time.

:D

/waits for more technical explanations/

One more difference, much better coverage on GSM

G = GSM (slow)(least power drain)(widest coverage)
2.5G = Edge (not as slow)
3G = WCDMA (Fast)
4G = lTE (Fastest so far)(Highest battery drain)(Shortest coverage)
