Galaxy S4 issues - software or dud phone?

Hey all

I have a Galaxy S4 on contract from Telkom mobile. It's about 4 months old, and I have had so many problems with it I'm about to lose my mind.

The issues I've experienced are as follows:

  • While typing in any app (messages, email, whatsapp etc), the screen will flash black and the keyboard disappears. I then have to go into the text input box to bring the keyboard back on screen again. This happens about 10 times a day.
  • When playing a game, most often Subway surfer, the screen flashes black really quickly and I can see a date/time at the top of the screen before it goes back to the game which has paused itself.
  • At least once a day, I get an error message on the screen stating "unable to detect your sim card. Your device will restart to check for your sim card"
  • If I leave the phone on the desk, at least 5 times a day I'll hear the phone make the 'lock/unlock' screen noise and the display will light up, almost as if the phone is unlocking and then locking itself again.
  • when playing videos in any video app (Youtube, stock video player, VLC), the video stutters and has green lines all over it

The phone is stock standard, running the latest version of Android, and all apps are the most recent versions. I've tried a factory reset but no luck.

Has anyone experienced similar issues? I'm really hoping there's some software glitch that I can try and fix myself and it's not the phone that needs to be repaired/replaced, as I can't afford to be without a phone for the usual cell company repair time.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a dud. I've had mine for about 1.5 years and have had no issues besides a swollen battery, which Samsung happily replaced immediately.

Thanks for the feedback.

That's what I was afraid of. I read somewhere that you can take Samsung products to Dion Wired for warranty repairs. Is this legit or am I better off going to Telkom and letting them do it?

Take it to the Samsung store?

Where did you take it to be replaced? I've currently got the same issue on two family members' S4's
