GamCo has a new Hosting Package which is free.

Its not a lot but its local and hopefully a step towards more in the near future. The package consists of 1MB Storage 50MB Data Transfer, a Free (yourname.za.net) Domain and a Free 5MB Mail Box with 1GB Data Transfer.

Further details can be found on the web site.

Is your website Firefox (2.0.0.3) compatible? I just looked and it appears messed up

Yes, it's obviously not a package targeted towards corporate users, graphics designers, etc who would make use of databases, flash pages, high resolution images and what not.

I do however think that it's a great idea to offer free webspace even if it is only 1 mb storage and 50 mb data transfer, as it allows inexperienced users to use the webspace as a host for their personal material. It also allows students who study basic html to practise by having their content hosted online.

As stated on that product page, GamCo are even offering e-mail support together with this free product, a benefit to consumers which could clearly take up some of their support staff's time.

I think it would be great for the local market if other ISPs would follow suit with similar free packages such as the international market which has had for quite some time already.

Its so limited that it seems the aim is to get people to set up a website there, realise these limitations and then migrate to a paid package.

50MB data transfer.
Hmmmmmmmm.
And then? Do you cut the website off or pull a WebAfrica and charge the client?

You do know that TelkomInternet offers a better deal than this?.

[edit]
TerlkomInternet's offer:
Comes with the 3GB Advance Package:
- 5MB of space.
- Unlimited up and download.
Comes with the 3GB Premium Package [R20 more]:
- 10MB of space.
- Unlimited up and download.

NOTE: No .. they [teklominternet] will not setup a Za.Net domain name for you, and I did not ask how the emails work, and .. .it's only valid while you are a teklom Internet subscriber.
[/edit]

If GamCo clarifies what happens when you go past 50MB, then i'll be a lot more comfortable.
GamCo does say:If you pass the 50MB limit 3 times your site will be deleted.
But .. i'm not sure ... threy may still charge you every time you pass the 50MB limit.

GamCo's Free Hosting offering will only be available on a Linux Platform. You will be allowed 1MB storage and 50MB Data Transfer. 1 x Free 5MB POP3 Mail Box is also provisioned. A free (yourname.za.net) is also provided for both Web Site and Mail use. This service though free needs to be renewed each 12 months by mailing [email protected], should you fail to renew your web site it will be deleted. Should you exceed your free data transfer and storage space more than 3 times you will be notified by GamCo giving you a option to upgrade to the Linux Starter Hosting (R19-00pm) failing this your service will be discontinued.

lol, RAS :D

No wonder no companies offer free stuff, when a company steps up to the plate and make a move in the right direction (albiet small) it gets slammed. Every one want the world but does not want to pay for it.

Its not a bad offer considering its totally free, just has very limited uses.

A popular use of this package is for the Free Mail Box, you would be able to register your own domain and have a custom mail box eg [email protected], again for most here a 5MB mail box is not alot but its free, local and customised which is a little better than some of the other free mail services in SA.

You can do the same thing and have more features, space etc. with a za.net domain and Google Domain apps, except that its not local.

Well exactly, it's not local.

I guess you could host like a avatar and signature image on it for use on forums that don't have the feature of uploading it to them? =P
