Gamers in test match

awesome to hear that something is happening like this. Good luck.

Good Luck to the Boys (and Girls if there are any) Kick some swedish posterior.

played tons of dota game with our guys and it cool to see them playing big games like these. hope they make the replays available. good luck

My friend went up to Dreamhack (20000 man gaming lan) in Sweden a couple weeks ago, playing COD4/5... apparently thrashed the locals, yet the SK international team raped them  He did mention individual skill is very close but the teamwork is a huge difference

good to see this all happening. The dota comunity in south africa is growing at a rapid rate, and this will only help to improve local gamers.

@ben dover Dota is big in this country. And the fact that there is no COD4/5 team is due to the lack of participation from the respective comunitys, there were SA colours up for grabs for it, but nobody pitched.

The Trials were held at stupid time; most COD teams decided to rather participate at Rage and Vendetta and therefore did not have the funds to fly over and take part in the trials. My team at the time (reZ) did not take part in the trials because no other teams were pitching.

Dota has on average 1000 players on at peak times while COD4 has about 100-200. Dota is still the bigger and most widely played game.

For the COD 4 nobody showed up. So therefore, based on our regulations, we have no Protea COD 4 team.

Mind Sports SA does not recognise rAge as an official national gaming event and therefore did not take its timing into consideration for national trials.

...lol

Disregard for the biggest Gaming event in South Africa... If MSSA had proved itself mentally handicapped before I would've been surprised.

"Widely played"...sure, but that is not really a true reflection of whether it should be recognised. I'm sure there were times when there were 500 people playing The Sims 2, but that certainly didn't mean that we should scrap 1.6/quake3 as a competitive game and have a national Sims2 team. The competitive community playing DotA is very unstable (bar perhaps the top 3/4 teams) and even when you manage to convince the teams to play in a competition, you scarcely see more than 20-25 teams at an event.

In 2008, COD4 has come to the table with no less than 40-50 teams entered in most of the major events, throughout the year.

In a competitive sense (which is, after all, what this thread is all about), DotA is certainly not the "biggest"/"best". Maybe the fact that it is "free" (for most of the people playing it) contributes to the large size of the community, but that certainly doesn't make it the more influential community.

Can't say I agree with this either. Maybe the fact that it was poorly scheduled and the online league was incredibly unpopular...or perhaps the fact that they insisted on using an archaic ruleset and ignored the complaints of the majority of the teams...or perhaps the fact that the guys running the MSSA league this year only really have a background in DotA (as far as competitive PC gaming goes) and so they found it difficult to bridge the gap to the other communities?

Its poor form to turn around and blame "the participation from the respective comunitys" when in fact the organisation hosting the event isn't exactly known for being on the high-grounds themselves. Sure, if you have a superb event and a flawless history, then you can blame others...but this clearly isn't the case.

quite cool, Supersport should cover this and give it a chance as a "tv sport", might prove interesting..or dstv needs a dedicated gaming channel maybe?

There are some folks from Multichoice who are giving it a go (source).

Its still got quite a long way to go, but its a start. It only launched this week!

Trying to convince supersport is going to be a tough job. They seem quite happy with their lineup of cycling, equestrian sports and running.

Good luck to the SA team. Hope they upload some of those reply's for us to watch.

I'd like to see a a traditional 3N match - OZ/ZA/NZ
