I now there have been a lot of discussions about gaming and it appears that after the launch iBurst will not be recommended for gamming.

Could I please get some clarification about this. Are gamers going to be shafted or not.

From what I have seen gaming is going to be near impossible as the ports are going to be shaped and most ISP’s tell you that you are running kazaa on your connection if you request a breakdown of you traffic whilst playing online games.

This would be rather sad as up until about 2 weeks ago and before the major problems occurred, iBurst was great for internet gamming. I will admit I love my online games and it would be great to have a telkom alternative to gaming. On a even more personal note I will not if possible directly support telkom after the service I have received and the total lack of professional courtesy shown by both there technical staff, as well as the administration staff of telkom.

Ok first of all iBurst are now sayign they arent goign to be shaping stuff once the cap is in place. Secondly it isn't port shaping that makes iBurst crap for gaming, it is because it is a wireless connection. Wireless connections have worse pings than say ADSL, this is because there are alot more factors involved like signal, quality of signal etc, but also because iBurst has to contantly keep checking for new towers, since it is mobile. They could give you a 10mbit wireless connection totally unshaped and its still not going to be as good as adsl. iburst pings can be on par with adsl, which is good for gamers since games rely heavily on ping speed, but if they are on par its only for a short while.

Also you should know games dont actually send that much data, i think it averages to 30MB an hour, so shaped or not shaped it wouldn't affect 95% of games

however, if you want to play WoW with a good ping, you would be better off using iBurst or UUNET uncapped ADSL package.

Pick your poison, personally, I'd choose the latter, because like slimothy mentioned, the wireless connection add's a few ms to your ping.

as for shaping, we'd have to wait and see

With UT2k4 I have had anything from 80ms to over 1000ms on local servers. ADSL you would get sub 50ms. Although 80ms is fine for me. One big thing that also makes it unsuitable is that the ping is not constant. If your ping was contant at 140-150ms then you could play with that, ajusting to it. But when it jumps 200ms every so often then it's not possible to play

how does UT2k4 perform on iBurst on local servers? I have not reinstalled it... so just wandering.

iburst was NOT designed for gamers, even the japanese company responsible for this technology kyocera has said so in interviews to australian websites. It is not for gamers, thats all you need to know, its nothing to do with WBS's shaping policies or WBS at all, if you are getting broadband primaraly for gaming, DO NOT get iBurst, get ADSL.

That was on local servers. Don't play intl servers

I disagree. pro-gamers, yes you are right. it's not for them, move on. Someone like me who plays once or twice a week, doesn't take it too seriously, iBurst is fine (when it works obviously)

it depends on the game dfantom, i play tony hawk underground 2 online for maybe 30 minutes a month, so yeah that game i can play fine but I am certainly not gonna get hardcore into a doom3 or CS with iburst. Also I was just stating what the kyocera boys said about thier product, and if they say its crap for gaming, then who am I to differ with the geniuses they are?

I play WoW , US server. It works .... the ping is usually between 500-700ms which is very playable .. there might be a slight delay every now and again ... but thats only when my utd loses signal for a few seconds ... otherwise its (almost) perfect. :)

I love this game btw. I'm always playing ... and my girlfriend wants to burn it .... oops :)

Latency is not such a big problem the main concern I got ATM is that with latency of 450 - 700 is very playable, but what happens is that the connection just drops I mean pings, surfing, downloading you name it and until I disconnect and reconnect to iburst by totaly powering down the utd I am stuffed. Has happened twice this morning.

i gotta play games where a 700ms ping is playable, and th reason your connection is dropping is "Interference is causing intermittent backhaul failure to major relay, impacting connectivity to several base stations.", you really should check out the second network status page .

"i gotta play games where a 700ms ping is playable"

World of Warcraft was coded to handle high latency twit.

last night playing on a ut2k4 server hosted on an ADSL connection, and ping was 96-120 avg.

About every 45min it would start to spike to 200+, just disconnected and reconnected and it was fine. This lasted until just before midnight, when it jumped to 400-500ms so i just gave up and went to bed

On a solo it will kill me but most of my playing is in a group or with the guild and I do not do PvP. besides it is generally 500 ms which is the same as using dialup
