Games condition young people espacially teens.

No I dont have children and I'll be very worried if my child started stealing.
Careful supervision is all I can suggest. Maybe speak to a psycologist/psychiatrist [I can never tell the difference] or someone who can offer some advice. But I dont think buying him GTA was such a good idea.

One of my friends [when he was a kid, 4 maybe 5] wanted to play Tarzan with some wooly string that was hanging from a curtain..he jumped off a couch and almost hung himself. He didn't even have Sega.

Psychiatrists prescribe drugs, psychologists can't...

...but i am going to bunk work today - MUST be that evil game called willie beamish that taught me that

Just look at the level of crud we are fed on a daily basis just by listening radio, watching news or picking up newspapers -

do we take the same judgment onto martial arts for example and say its going to make me a murderer because in essence you are learning to kill another person or persons ?

Damn that Willie Beamish! At least it taught me to use anti septic

- Don't think it was wow, i've never snuck into someones house and killed them in that game. Sold stuff blacksmith yes, murdered innocents... no.

I've been playing games since I was 8 (maybe even earlier). I've played everything under the sun...violent and non-violent and I turned out okay. It depends if the child can handle the game or not.

Give a weak-minded/mentally-unstable child a game like...Soldier of Fortune or GTA and I'm sure they will go on a gun-toting rampage. Parents need to adhere to the age-ratings on the box.

What people/adults don't realise is that some games aren't for kids. Like a movie, check the age-rating.

The game problem sounds more like a symptom than a root cause.

Games affects

I have been playing computer games since they came out and have played everything u name it since I was 10 years old and have yet 2 kill or stab or steal anything from anybody. The worst game I would say that I have played and only played for 5 minutes was manhunt its gruesome and sick. The problem with games like that is when the person playing it starts associating the game with real life then it becomes very dangerous. Can remember about 2 years back where a friend garroted his school friend to death exactly as he did in the game manhunt. The thing is that children that age cant associate between whats right and whats wrong in real life. For example getting so many pts for killing a hooker in GTA. It also depends on the childs psyological state and how he associates the things he does in the games.

Like I said in the other thread, get him Bully (Small school version of GTA) and then post again on this forum n tell us what happened :)

Games are evil...

Pacman influenced an entire generation to munch pills and listen to electronic music!

What could be worse?

Seriously though, the correlation between playing violent games and committing violent acts is so low that it seems more likely that the root cause is some deep seated psychological issue that the child already suffers from. To me it's a bit like the existence of guns being blamed for murders rather than the murderers themselves.

yeah, guns don't kill people, bullets do.

- sorry couldn't help it

My son (12 at the time.) started getting fixated on this game. He played it day in and day out and I didn't really bother him much because he was always in his room and out of sight.

Gradually he began behaving differently. He lied to me. He sometimes almost burned the house down playng with fire when he's alone. Eventually he started stealing my money and some stuff in the house. This was not appropriate or even logical as he had more money than he needed. Sitting in his room all the time he never really needed to use even his pocket money.

So I sat in his room and looked at the game he was playing. I don't recall the name but what he had to do with three of his buddies in the game was to break into peoples houses when they were sleeping and then to kill them first. After that then to rob them of everything they had and to go sell it at the blacksmith. The more money he made this way the better his score was.

I dumped the game in the dustbin and bought him Grand Theft Auto. Within a month he would talk about smoking and wasting fools at his school with attitude problems. He's 13 going on 14 now.

Have any of you found similar situations?

Although trashing that game and giving him GTA... ;)

You might actually see an improvement :p

Yeah, I see what will happen.

>Insert kids name here< go and do your homework!

No mom, I can't, I have to go shower now, then I have to call >Friend< or he will see me as a bad friend, then I have to eat something or I'll get upset and my comfort levels will go down. HAHA
