Midrand. Yeah don't mention it. ;)
My son (12 at the time.) started getting fixated on this game. He played it day in and day out and I didn't really bother him much because he was always in his room and out of sight.

Gradually he began behaving differently. He lied to me. He sometimes almost burned the house down playng with fire when he's alone. Eventually he started stealing my money and some stuff in the house. This was not appropriate or even logical as he had more money than he needed. Sitting in his room all the time he never really needed to use even his pocket money.

So I sat in his room and looked at the game he was playing. I don't recall the name but what he had to do with three of his buddies in the game was to break into peoples houses when they were sleeping and then to kill them first. After that then to rob them of everything they had and to go sell it at the blacksmith. The more money he made this way the better his score was.

I dumped the game in the dustbin and bought him Grand Theft Auto. Within a month he would talk about smoking and wasting fools at his school with attitude problems. He's 13 going on 14 now.

Have any of you found similar situations?

I suppose thats true but then there is also the psychological situation of conditioning. Gore might make you gag but the more you play Quake for example the more you get used to it and even start accepting it.

Now the same can happen with stealing and killing.

It only works that way if people associate the games with reality in the first place. If someone starts associating with the game, it's not the game that causes it, but the attitude of the person that's playing it.

I always played as a thief in all the rpg games since the guest for glory days since I was 10 years old and have yet to steal something. I have also never tried to get a sword and stab someone. Which I did in the games.

I have also played fps games and I haven't and still don't want to shoot someone. I haven't even ever shot a real gun. The only guns I use are the fps games I play.

Games only influence people who aren't psychologically ready for them. If they aren't ready for games certain books or tv would do the same thing. It's not the games it's the individual playing the games.

Ok so are you guys saying what then? That its not a clear cut case?

How can one then be sure? Age restrictions on the games is also not always appropriate. Some people never grow up for example.

I'm playing Crysis and OH MY DEAR GOD! I Wish I could get a nanosuit, I'd go up to my boss, turn on "maximum strength" and M03R him !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! haha.

Games/movies/music absolutely affect one's psyche. The more malleable the psyche, the more the effects manifest.

/dons anti-flame suit

Eugene perhaps you should condition him to have a break every now and then ?

ive played every thing from pacman to lula3d to extreme gore/violence, same with books, music and movies.

so far only crime i commented was one stolen book and a parking ticket.

omgz i feel so evil must be the potter books teaching dark satanic rituals, just sad i finished the last one :/

o well time for more priest manga and some other fantasy.

i laff it off or maybe its the weak minded that gets affected - who knows.

This part I really don't understand. He has issues with emulating the stealing in other games and then you go and buy him GTA?!? Are we talking about the same game here, cause the GTA that I remember gave bonus points/rewards for killing hookers etc.

sigh...lets not have a big discussion about how Harry Potter Books do/dont portray satanism...sigh

...but i am going to bunk work today - MUST be that evil game called willie beamish that taught me that

Just look at the level of crud we are fed on a daily basis just by listening radio, watching news or picking up newspapers -

do we take the same judgment onto martial arts for example and say its going to make me a murderer because in essence you are learning to kill another person or persons ?

Hmmm... get him oblivion... Coz if you kill, steal or do any thing bad, you go to jail...
and you loss cash and stuff... and it's a good game as it does teach you to help others for the greater good.

Hmmm... I seem to play more games then it's most likely healthy to... but I'm not an evil person... there are better games for younger kinds though... I mean I had theme hospital and that jazz...

Just look at the age rating though... if the game is rated M 17 then thats REALLY not good for your kid... get him into racing games, the new need for speed is out as we :) .
racing games are just as stimulating and have more effort=reward in them...

Games are just a medium for entertainment. and thats what they do, the entertain... The user must understand that what is in the game, is not for reality.

OR
you could get him leisure suit Larry, then watch him becoming a little player ;)

Could only be... World of Warcfat :p

I suggest you buy him Wii sports, or even better Spiderman, so he can jump off the roof and realise what an idiot he is.

I dont think he enjoys stealing because of the game, I think he steals in the game because stealing is fun, I think he steals from you because STEALING IS FUN.

I suppose this is true. No he doesn't steal any more. But you're right. It was fun when I was a kid. Those peaches and grapes were more delicious. But getting them was all the adventure.

After I ceased the game he stopped too. Maybe it just got him thinking along a pattern He never did before.

Spiderman :D:D:D. Wicked. You probably don't have children but it is funny. Then I can start a lawsuit like they do in the US, or in SA too now I see.
