Me and my buddies were looking into hosting a Minecraft and we on sort of a tight budget. I have a few questions to ask before I actually start taking out money.

Can I host this Minecraft server on a VPS without any performance issues? If so, what is a good VPS provider?

Would one of these servers be fine? - http://www.vps.co.za/ssd-cloud-vps

I am kind of new to server hosting and any help will be greatly appreciated :)

Suggestion - and not to be rude.

Dont bother trying to host a MC server in SA for an SA audience unless you are super dedicated and are inclined to consider decent sized mods. Experienced thumb-suck indicates most MC players are under the age of 16 and hence not likely to stick around long (as with most MC servers).

Those server hosting pricing are also rather naff.

Yea lol Agreed with Grimis, I am the co-founder of beastcraft a division of beastnetworks, the network currently hosts 6 or 7 active minecraft servers in SA. I am not active anymore due to what Grimis said you need to be dedicated and most are kids so you needs serious amounts of patience with them and the time you need to work on the server like running them updating them patching bugs and exploits it eventually becomes a handful. But there is no harm in giving it a try. You could use a VPS preferably local hosted i know afrihost can sort you out mweb works with multiplay and gameservers but they expensive i guess any ISP or hosting company that has dedi's or VPS'S should sort you out fine start with 1GB ram and about 12-20 slots :)

How many buddies do you want to have on the server. (also include your buddies, buddies)

Oh I forgot to mention that I don't really wanna start a community but rather a private server for me and my buddies to play on..

Sounds cool :). Any suggestions as to which Hosting company I should go with?

I'd say go with domains.co.za. Lots of people moved to them after the whole Afrihost thing. I haven't hosted with them myself and I've got cloud servers at Afrihost but I'd say give them a try:

In actual fact, maybe you can contact them and ask if you can try it out for a day or two. To see if it fits your needs. They'll most likely be fine with it.

I host a game server on a VPS at Web Telecoms and its got great performance (provided you take a VPS with sufficient ram, cpu etc). have a look at http://www.web-telecoms.co.za/vps

Hmm what control panel do they use?

I'm considering setting up a HIGHLY modded private server through creeperhost, let me know if you're interested and maybe we can split costs...

I am sure you can get a POC anywhere around here :)
So far Domains.co.za seems to be the lead for most VPS business ;)
