I have not been into gaming for a long time and I was mainly a console gamer. Also in terms of computers and laptops I am mostly stuck in the Mac ecosystem. My kid is in high school. Though he’s not a very big gamer he’s gotten into his head Macs do not make good gaming machines. His I7 dell will not last even 2 hours of charger even after a battery change.As a family we move around a bit so the only option for his machine is a laptop. I am looking at the gaming laptops and they are quite pricey. Which website would folks recommend for a gaming laptop. He codes using python and is a light gamer but likes to think of themselves as a gamer. I see good prices on Evetech are they reliable?

I do not recommend Evetech. Grey imports, dodgy practices, bad service, warranties not honoured. Just check their Hellopeter.
Wootbooks from Wootware are a good option, but keep in mind buying new for anything actually gaming-capable, laptops will be pricy. Maybe look into secondhand options or through resellers at Carbonite.
Another option is building a PC in a mini-ITX more portable case. But that's quite a rabbit hole to go down.

Wow, thanks for the flag. I saw some good priced MSIs and almost made the jump. I truly need a laptop as we travel and sometimes for extended period at least once a year and he needs to carry a laptop for online coding classes. Obviously I don’t want to be annoyed by a teenager complaining all the time he doesn’t have his computer to game also. I will try Wootware. I do know it’s a rabbit hole but he knows I am not willing to go down that hole. He’s been warned this machine should take him through high school to college.

Never used them before and sadly they had that unit that I was eyeing. Main reason is currently using a Mini ITX Atom and Mrs is complaining that it cant stream 4K.
So kinda paying R4K for brownie points or more accurately to open up the TV in the lounge

Evetech gives the best prices,but service and warranty can be a challenge - secondhand would give better price for the same spec but then again warranty can be hit/miss

Some thoughts:
No laptop battery is going to last hours when gaming unplugged.
Having games on the same laptop he has to work on is a tempting distraction.
You don't need the latest model (although it's probably worthwhile to spend X more on a newer/better one if you're already spending Y on one)
e.g 4060 over a 4050 @ R2k extra.
I have an older RTX 3060 one and it's fine, if you really need to run everything at max resolution max settings then be prepared to pay ridiculous prices.
The 4060 is R2k more than the 4050, but the 4070 is R7k more than the 4060 and the 4080 R10k more than the 4070.

You can upgrade the RAM of course and add a second NVME if needed, it runs very well.... just remember to use one of the tricks to bypass the online M$ account and make a local one.
EDIT: the fans can be loud though

Thanks for all the advice. So it will definitely have to be a laptop due to the need for it to be mobile. However, at home we do have a gaming screen and it will be docked and plugged in. On the road it will be plugged in but obviously will have to use the internal screen. Wootware did not seem to have much options for laptop. Seems like a great place to build a gaming machine which is not an option for us. Yes working and gaming on one machine has it challenges but for now we cannot afford or motivate two machines and it’s definitely time to start learning to manage time, so we helping. Also the risk of having too many devices for a child. School requires an iPad, a cell phone and a laptop. Adding a desktop in the mix seems a bit much. The budget should be maximum early ZAR25000 obviously the lower the better.
