Hey guys and gals, I'm in need of some advice.
I'm looking to upgrade my laptop and was considering a getting a gaming laptop but my budget is only R10 000.
I haven't had much time to game lately but I usually only play a few online mmo's (Genshin Impact being my current) so I don't think I need to high end specs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

10k won't get you a gaming laptop, it would just barely get you an i5 nowadays with an onboard GFX card.

Maybe used option.

My alienware was around that price used and still pretty good, accept for the power adapter starting to fail or the sensor in it. Super pricey to get 240watt adapter :(

When did you get the alienware? Cause 10k maybe a year or 2 ago would've gotten you a decent gaming laptop, now, doubt it :-(

Used is definitely your best option just check the battery health... Carbonite is your best option otherwise save a bit more and get a new one for around R 15k-R20k

Bought in the UK while I was there few years back.

Guy was bit of noob he advertised 4th gen laptop but he said it died and dell replaced it.

So when it arrived I got 6820HK I7, 12gb ram , R9 m390x and nvme drive.
Just Upgraded the ram to 16gb and bought a new battery for it.

But the adapter or sensor is now broken, so the laptop does not pick up the charger as original. When that happens dell throttle the cpu to 800mhz and max 20% cpu usage of the 800mhz.

But with throttlestop application you bypass this and laptop runs at full speed.

If you want to play games decently you're going to have to probably look more in the region of 13-15k at least. But here are a few okay options that sort of fit your budget that are new. Don't expect great performance though as it uses the onboard graphics with the Ryzen chips (still way better than what intel offers in this price range):

10k

25+ fps at 1080 in Genshin Impact. Looks better for 720p gaming. Low settings.

11k

12k

29+fps at 1080 in Genshin. Low settings.

Thanks for the advice. Looks like I need to save up to find something decent. I actually came across the below but it was out of stock hence me checking to see if there was any in a similar price range.

This looks like a good option. Any tips for buying on Carbonite?

Check the guys score his name and check his reviews and items he/she has sold, wouldn't buy a high value item if there is less than 10 reviews. Also ask for pictures and use common sense

Thanks. I'm still a bit dubious of buying electronics second hand. I might just save a bit more and wait for black Friday, Christmas or year end specials.

I'm selling my 7yr old MSI GT60 Dominator for R5000 if you're on a tight budget. It can play Battlefield 5 (albeit on low graphics).

I haven't advertised it yet because I'm waiting for a brand new replacement battery. Otherwise it's in good condition and comes with a 250GB SSD and 1TB 7200RPM disc. PM me if you're interested. I'm in JHB.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll save a bit more and get something new.
