Gaming laptops nearing mainstream viability

I think the moment AMD Trinity gets off the ground you are going to see some wonderful gaming laptops sub R7000.

Is a 12k laptop with a 460 mobile chip considered mainstream?

You could run a 590/6990 desktop for that price or close to it.

Whats the point? At any given price-point a desktop will win hands down. Plus most ppl game while at home anyway so mobility isn't really necessary.

The only real market is people who *must* have a laptop for say work and can't afford both laptop and desktop.

Well i think the point is when will people start buying laptops as gaming machines, some people for instance cannot afford a gaming rig and a laptop so having a laptop as both would be ideal for some.

The problem is gaming laptops are so expensive that you can buy yourself a cheaper laptop for say 7k and still get a decent gaming rig with the other 6k, well it will whip a laptop silly :D

Well I loved my Old Qosmio X300 with 2 x 970M's in SLI, that was until it retired to a media Center

The new X770's also looks hot. http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops/qosmio/X770/X775-Q7270

One problem with Gaming laptops, its kind of useless in the fact that they eat power like its no ones business. So you always have to be close to a power supply. Still great for LAN's.

Personally I still prefer a desktop for home gaming.

The Lenovo Y570P is going for R7999 at pczone http://zones.co.za instead of an nvidia card, it has an ati hd6570.
is this still a good deal?
That looks like a very good offer to me, although you might want to try and extend the warranty from a 1 year one to a 3 year one.

I can't find any other SA shops that sell that new model yet.

The Nvidia GT 555m is slightly better than the AMD HD6570 - see http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-6570M.41479.0.html

The only thing that I dislike about it is its poor resolution and 1 year warranty.
I just wish the manufacturers could change over to 16:10 screens again with decent resolutions: 1600x900+ for 15.6" screens and 1920x1200 for 17" screens.

1920 x 1200 might be a little rough on those light vga cards though? surely the lower resolution is a must for low end vga cards?

cool thanks, I'm in no hurry to buy. Perhaps I'll wait for the Y570 to come down in price. Currently its going for R9099, the reason I'm not too happy with the Y570P is a lack of switchable graphics and general design compared to the Y570.

If supply/demand can get the pricing down to around R6K-R7K, hell then I am game :) as I get older I really don't care anymore about the components and this bluddy tower on my desk is starting to annoy me  :p

The problem is that people are willing to pay that amount for a bloody crippled tablet phone. So I just don't see decent gaming notebooks reaching those prices soon.

Also, I think it's about time we drop the "gaming" notebook classification.
I have a "gaming" notebook but I basically just use it for work. The idea that you need a decent GPU these days just for gaming is BS.
Some applications are starting to use the simple brute force of the GPU more often for certain processing requirements, meaning a gaming notebook can have a longer lifespan than a similar system with a crappy GPU.

Just having a decent GPU for running a hardware accelerated UI makes a huge difference in how responsive and fluid the system feels.

They might be expensive, but of all the hardware I've ever bought in my entire life, my G73 is probably the best money I've ever spent on something.
Having all that amount of power in something you can easily drop in your trunk to go with you wherever you end up is absolutely brilliant.

EDIT: Oh yes, and I'm glad to see that companies are starting to realize that a lot of users prefer a gaming notebook that doesn't look like a freakin' cheap Christmas tree.

+1

Occasional photo shopping, maybe video editing and programs like CAD run so much better with discreet graphics. Simply adding a newer video card to my PC made a world of difference to the general usability.

meh its just stupid s.a prices we need to pay , in the usa its so cheap :(

why i imported mine, thinking of doing another import next year to upgrade my current lappy.
