Building a gaming PC for under R30,000

While it is possible to game for less than R10,000 on a PC or console, those looking for a more immersive experience may be willing to spend more to build a powerful setup.

MyBroadband investigated what kind of gaming rig we could assemble with a budget of R30,000 in South Africa.
 
why not drop the money on some stuff and get 3070-3070ti? 5600x kinda overkill

I am not hating on the 2 TB ssd but stuff like that is really easy to add later on then trying to sell a 3060 and upgrading it
 
Shoo .... I built my last gaming PC as the New AMD cards came out in 2020. 30K wouldn't cut it. Basically just my GPU & CPU cost close to 30K. RX 6800XT was about 18K and the 5800X was about 9K?
 
Can save money on the motherboard, cooling, ram, storage space and maybe a smidge on the PSU to bring this down to the 25k-ish range while maybe losing 1-2% performance.
 
Bought an Asus gaming laptop, Razer mouse & added in a 2TB m.2 SSD for less than that.

I was thinking that 30K seemed a bit overpriced for a midrange system like that

Better GPU for less the price, CPU 2% slower, power supply 100w less, you don't need an 850w for that build, sure no RGB liquid cooling, but you could add it back.

Now this is much better build.
The one in the article is ridiculous, went out of their way to waste money.
 
The article forgot about one of the most infamous arguments - wait for USB4, DDR 5, and PCIe 5.0 which is coming out with Ryzen 7000 in the next few months! Also, the next generation of graphics cards are about to come out.

If you are spending R30k on your gaming PC, might as well future proof it for the next 5-10 years.

That being said, if the GPU is the bottleneck, you won't be limited by buying previous generation RAM, MOBO, and CPU.
Ryzen 5600x is indeed a brilliant CPU, beating even an i9 10900k at gaming. And, at only 65W TDP!

But I will be waiting before upgrading.

A 2tb Solid State is honestly stupid. You only need 500gb, and get a secondary drive as storage. No need to waste soo much on an SSD.

And you blew 30k and you dont have a monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers or headphones yet?

Does it justify 30k spend just to play games where a 10k system can play the same games? And in 6 months your card will be obsolete, so you will have to spend how much for another one?

1. Get a game console. Are you really a pro gamer that needs such a big rig? how much money will such a rig make you? Will it make your parents broke? Is it really needed?

Gamers may hate me but quite honestly.

I refitted an HP Elitedesk 6th series i7 with 16gb crucial memory, a samsung pro ssd drive 500gb, and have a dell pro monitor, with a gt 1030 graphics card from gigabyte. my total setup cost me 10k.

choice of keyboard? hp slimline and mouse mx518. I got hold of a xonar pci-e soundcard and thx speakers.

I wont loose over sleep over it, yet I can play anything pretty much.

My buddy has a 60k system with all the bells and whistles, and I still kick his ass.

Saving that 20k can be far more beneficial than blowing it on something that will be outdated in 6 months to 1 year.

Dude in 1 year, this will be replaced by something new.
 

Honestly most pc sales guys in stores have no idea what they try and sell you, yet they tell you its the latest and you need it, but honestly if you are just doing basic excel work, you dont need the latest.

I once had a kid's dad come to me asking for a gaming machine as he need it for cad work at varsity. But he wanted a gaming graphics card and not a quadro card.

Honestly in cad work, gaming cards topple over like dominoes.

DONT GET SUCKERED INTO SOMETHING YOU DONT REALLY NEED, OR CANNOT REALLY AFFORD.

Perhaps but how much money does that 30fps add to your life.

If I have to calculate how much my friend thats a client of mine spent on gaming upto now?

300k is about the figure with inflation 600k.
Scary figure.

My other friend upgraded his macs using his house accessbond each year. Before he blinked he had spent 600k over 9 years.

That was about the price he paid for the house. Current value R2.6 million. All for the latest macs.

Invest in property while you can rather. Better long term invesment.

A fast pc with a 24 inch screen

Or a 75inch qled screen with a ps5 or xbox x. Heck you can plug in your keyboard and mouse to make you happy.
 
That’s a Gaming PC case for your R30k, no monitor… add R3500?
