Hi again

Ok so I have a sexy arse Mobo with a nice Core Duo CPU that I want to pimp out as a gaming rig.

Now this is what I have in mind:

4x 1GB memory RAM
2x 250 GB HDD's
1x Radeon HD4870 GFX

I need a Nice CPU fan as there is none on the board.

Now appart from that, I would like the best of all

What is the best gaming RAM to buy ?
The best Gaming mouse ?
The best Gaming Keyboard ?
The Best Gaming Screen (17") ?
Best Tower for the above

Also what PSU, was thinking of putting in a 700w off the bat.

Bare in mind I will build this in January only, so my budget should be around R 10 - R 15k

Any other suggestions is also appreciated :)

I would go for a Logitech laser gaming mouse, something like the G5, I love mine....By Jan there might be something new out by them..17" screen??? Don't waste your money; if you got the budget get at least a 19" if not a 22".

But the 22" is not really that good for gaming :( If I won't have a problem with it then sure I would love a 22" Samsung :o

Where'd you get that idea?
The majority of hardcore gamers here have 22" screens. And a 4870 wouldn't even blink an eye running a big monitor

Why not rather go for 2 x 2GB?

Gaming RAM I'd go for Corsair Dominator but I've heard good things about the Mushkin equivalent.

Best mouse and keyboard - probably Logitech G9 and G15 respectively.

You're going to be gaming on 17" max? Can't see any thing really special in that size, all seem standard.

Case-wise I'd go for the CoolerMaster CM690, very well-priced. Anted 900 is also very nice and not too expensive. If you want to fork out a lot then I'd go for one of the CoolerMaster Cosmos cases.

700watt would be overkill, I'd go for a 550watt Antec/CoolerMaster PSU.

That sounds perfect thanx PostmanPot.

The reason I want a 17" is that i have heard some of some problems with the 22" when it comes to gaming. If you guys assure me that will not be the case I'm all in on a 22"

I also want a Blu-Ray and DvD-rw

Does anyone have some prices on any of these ?

I'm sure these are isolated incidents. The 22" is brilliant.
Shouldn't even consider anything less that a 19"

That is ludicrous! 22" is the BEST for gaming, god I couldn’t imagine having to go back to a 19"

Gaming mouse get the Logitech G5.
If you can get hold of the blue Logitech G15 keyboard it's great. The new one is orange and reminds me of vomit. If you like the orange, hey good for you. Enjoy. :) Both have the lcd though. As much as some people say it's a gimick, it's the thing I miss the most after spilling a drink on my G15. :(

Screen definitely a 22"

Gaming cases are up to personal preference. Have a look at the raidmax smilodon or the Antec P182. If you want a silent pc get the Antec.

A 700watt is overkill.

I'd suggest a 600Watt, maybe 620/650. Only buy these brands of psus:

Zalman (HP-1), Corsair(HX), Antec(Neo HE), Pc Power and Cooling, Enermax.

If I think of more brands I'll let you know.

With regards to Hard drives, the 640gig and 750gig have the best bang for buck right now. Make sure it's Seagate.

I also remember saying you weren't gonna use that Dual core. With GTA4 pc recommending specs having tri and quad cores, multi core gaming is here, and will only become more prevalent. So a quad core is the way to go.

With regards to gaming ram, it's the part of the pc with the worst rand spent to fps gained ratio. Just get something that's Corsair or OCZ and you'll be fine. Preferably DDR2 1066. But who knows what DDR3 pricing will be like in Jan.

Most cpus come with a cpu cooler. If you're not gonna overclock, it's adequate.

Pleasure.

For a decent 22" you're looking at R2500 (2232GW) - R2800 (2253GW).

My current price on a LiteOn Blu-ray-reader/DVD-writer would be about R1350.

Why would you recommend a wireless mouse for a gaming pc?

I'd say the G5.

The Mobo I got as a gift only supports Duo Core and I got a CPU with it. So I want to use this instead of having to replace that also. The Duo Core will have to do. And yes the RAM is DDR2 :)

Looking @ getting the G15 - Looks like a nice keyboard, wonder if it is worth it though.

Can anyone give me a close guess as to the price for all the parts above + a 22" Samsung LCD :)

Oh it is.

If you can stand the new orange one, get it. Otherwise try find a pc shop that has old stock of the blue on. It's a pleasure to type on besides the fact the lcd is just orsum.

Just get a 3rd party lcd app like SirReal and you're good to go.

don't forget, you need a 64 bit os if you have more than 3 gigs ram or else it's wasted above 3 gig on 32 bit os.
