Cellular communications help build intelligent traffic solutions for Gauteng
Good news.
Things are so bad that the simple application of a random number generator would provide a radical improvement in the synchronisation of traffic lights in Gauteng. At least then one would have a 50% chance of a green light, unlike the current situation, where they appear designed to delay as much traffic as possible, and one is lucky to achieve a green light 20% of the time.
A similar communications and signage system is already in operation on the Ben Schoeman highway, giving travellers between Johannesburg and Pretoria accurate information on traffic conditions.
This will improve traffic management and, in future, enable the planned Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to get priority. Users will also have access to accurate, constantly updated information on arrival and travel times.
"The Minister reassured them that the taxi industry is the nucleus of the BRT system and that there is no way it can go ahead without the maximum participation of the taxi industry," he said.
