Johannesburg - Gautrain services have been suspended yet again between Hatfield, Pretoria and Centurion due to cable theft, the SABC reported on Tuesday.

This was the second time in a month that services were suspended because of cable theft.

The multi-billion rand transport system would also not be operational between Sandton and Rosebank stations in Johannesburg due to water leakages.

According to the report, buses would ferry passengers to their destinations.

Seems like PTA has nasty cable thieves. The OR Tambo Sandton link was up and running a year with none of this crap.

It's also broken between Sandton and Rosebank - it rained and it appears that rain is made of water.

:D

The guavament told them the acid mine drainage would have been solved by now. The water tables are full and this is not even rain season. This is also the reason for the delay in the other link.

Why did they not put a stop in Midrand?

They should have installed cameras on the lines, I didn't think there would be places desolate enough to steal cable between Jhb & Pta?

If I understand it they steal the line that feeds between Hatfield, PTA and Centurion. From there it works. So they bussed the people to Centurion this morning and from there they took the train.

I thought the whole line was supposed to be under surveillance - clearly not.

I'd suggest that there is a better than even chance that there is some internal complicity

There are cameras all along the line. The criminal obviously doesn't care as long as he knows it's going to take so long to reach him.
What they need to do is fortify the cable installations.

This is very disappointing and a shame because it is tarnishing the image of the Gautrain as a viable replacement for personal transport to and from work.

They also said they'd be burying the cable under tonnes of concrete. I am sure that the bill for construction has tonnes of cement for burying cable on the invoice. Not doing it makes for more profit.

Is it too early to start making "I told you so" jokes to the people closest to me who live with their heads in the sand? I guess so.
I'll just STFU and let the unfolding anarchy in this Banana Republic tell its own tale.

I do however feel bad for those people that really needed this alternative to work as planned.
