A trip on the Gautrain between Sandton and OR Tambo International Airport will cost R100, the companies behind the project announced on Tuesday.

A single train trip plus a single bus trip would cost R22.50 from Sandton to Marlboro, R27 from Sandton to Rhodesfield and R24.50 from Marlboro to Rhodesfield, the Gautrain Management Agency and Bombela Concession Company said in a joint statement.

Without the bus trip the ticket would be R6 cheaper. Trips to the airport from any of these stations would also cost R100.

These routes all open on June 8.

Parking at any station would cost R9.50 for the first 24 hours or part thereof as long as the train was also used. Someone only using the parking would pay "substantially" more.

The train and bus service would run from Monday to Sunday between 5.30am and 8.30pm, every 12 minutes during peak times (5.30 to 8.30am and 4 to 7pm) and every 20 minutes off-peak.

Commuters would have access to these services with a "contactless smart card". It would cost R10 and money could be loaded onto it as required.

"This fare policy is aimed at making the Gautrain attractive and affordable to broad sectors of the population without competing with existing modes of public transport."

Gautrain commuter fares would be "typically lower" than using a private vehicle for the same journey, but more expensive than using existing minibus taxis, Metrobus or Metrorail.
 
Prices seem a bit high and a round trip from Sandton to the airport with your car is more like R60. However this is convenient for the afternoon flights due to the insane traffic getting to the airport. If im travelling with the Wife though an extra R400 is gonna be too much for me.
 
So for a 21 workday you'll pay R2100 just to shuttle back and forth between Sandton and OR Tambo.

A car will be slightly cheaper (depending on make and model), but you'll have the additional hassle of parking.

They really should release a full tariff table so that you can see what will be cheaper - driving on the Ben Schoeman and getting tolled all the way from Pta to Jhb, or whether the gautrain will be cheaper.

At least the gautrain have one positive aspect - you avoid flat tyres, car breakdowns, accidents, hijackings and parking problems.
 
damn that is expensive. what was the point then? are they trying to compete with europe for expensive trains?
 
Wonder how much it would be to go to pretoria? I hope they are open in the early mornings :( I mean the whole point us young guys want it is so that we don't have to drive after a party :(
 
Oh FFS people, don't start this again. Look carefully at the prices of the various routes, look at the different coaches used on the different routes, look at the locations of the stations, and most importantly, think about the total cost of running a car!

manesan, R 60? no offence, but unless, when you say 'car', you actually mean Vespa, you need to look at what your real costs are. I doubt a Citigolf can do a trip to (and from?) the airport for R 60, ignoring the extra 30 minutes you lose in traffic.

Libs, it's R 2 100 back, and R 2 100 forth. R 4 200 total. But look at the service you've chosen; Sandton to Airport, in a luxury coach, everyday. IIRC, Rhodesfield is 5 minutes from the airport, so unless you work at the airport the total cost is only R 1 134 (R 27 x 21 x 2).

Take some time to look into the service, before you diss it, it's the start of the 'Jo'burg Underground', and I welcome it.

It is not anticipated to be a 24 hour service; at least not initially.

I tried the short version in the last (17 page?) thread, but everyone just ignored the facts, and started a debate about the ANC:confused:.

Too much to ask, but it is a pity. Maybe in a few years, I doubt it though, none of the undergrounds I've used were 24 hour.
 
silly billies. of course there will be week traveller and month traveller cards. they built a ****ing transport system in 5 years, im sure they didnt forget the part where someone travelling every day and someone travelling once a while pay different prices.

Come on peeps, if you want Cheap transport use metro-rail. Gautrain is a luxury coach aimed at the business people, and still too is damn cheap. The average price in peak hours on the London Tube is £10.00 thats R114.36 and it aint full luxury.....

Now they only need one or two 'skollies' on that Gautrain to attract commuters to it.

London and Sandton. London - probably the most important financial city in the world - and Sandton - a rural backwater. Did you compare average salary in London with that in SA too? Compare what the average Exec salary is then. So your point is?
 
The Tambo route is not meant to be a everyday transport route, its an airport shuttle. You will see that its really much cheaper to travel from Rhodesfield to Sandton for example and its about the same distance.

I'd be interested to see what the route from Malbro station to Park station would cost. That was my old work route and was costing me R1600 in petrol a month, exc the cost of the car+insurance+parking.
 
We still got a choice guys, we can either use the new toll highways 2 50c per Km or use the gautrain, the government is looking out for us to use public transport :D, if they made it cheaper then beggars and street vendors would start harassing the commuters LOL :)
 
you can get from one nedo of london to the other with around £2.50, is ria via our new official public transport? or is it the new tolled roads

It's £7.90 from Paddington (until a few months ago it was £5 something) and if you go by tube it's £4.50 during peak hours from zone 1 (e.g. Piccadilly Circus)
