Geely LC-Now available in SA, Is it worthwhile?

Yes, with that I will agree. They have even made previously not-so-safe cars like the Skodas and even Lambos a whole lot safer, amongst other things. But I think that is a European thing actually, ever since the Laguna the German makers have taken a very serious look at safety.

One thing that concerns me is pedestrian safety and judging by the bonnet angle of that Geely I'd say it will be a pretty safe car to get hit by. Obviously not as safe as my awesomest maximus Corsa, but close :cool:
 
CK - the bigger sedan. Tested last year. If you think a Chinese manufacturer can go from building an atrocious sedan to building a safe sub-compact in 12 months, you've got a dangerous amount of faith in the Chinese automotive industry.


Still safer than a Geely I'd wager...

Saw the video of the CK test, yep not safe at all, anyways the test was done last year but the said model was produced from 2005, please note that Geely now has Volvo under its portfolio and also aquired its R&D department.

I still don't think that the 156 is any better, but that does not mean that the newer Alfa models have not improved in safety. Companies cannot afford to remain stagnant and not improve on their failures. It's my firm believe that Geely Automotive has improved, it's newer models have scored C-NCAP ratings of 5 stars.
 
People bang on about the lack of 'safety features' on Chinese cars, but the irony is that you see only but high end,NCAP rated 5 cars, on our roads.

They had a few Geely models on display in Eastgate. They are not bad looking...the enterior is not bad either. I looked it up on Wikipedia as I have never heard of this make before. TURNS OUT THEY OWN VOLVO NOW! hahahaha.

Come on guys, they aren't that bad. Jaguar is owned by Tata and India has the ability to make good cars. The i10 is assembled in India and its a great little car.

Even the Nano is a safe little car, I've watched the crash videos, it has a good shell. It's a pity that it bounces off because of size.

Yeah, but have you ever driven a genuine Tata? They are sh*t. In Mauritius a lot of the buses are Tata, they are even sh*ttier.

Jag & LR may be owned by Tata, but Tata doesn't build them, JLR does.
 
Euro Ncap only rates tests up to the following speeds. It's true that most accidents happen at low speed. But once you start doing freeway speeds don't think that airbag and seat belt will save you in a head on.

Front impact test: 64kph
Side impact tesrt: 50kph
Side impact into pole test: 29kmh

If you have a head on with a car at 80kph and they are also doing 80kph that's a combined speed of 160kph which probably = death.

I have family in the retail motor industry. They had a Geely that they practically gave away because it was sitting and taking up space on the floor.

Test drive it! Drive it up a fairly/moderately steep incline on a highway and see if it can even hit 120km/h. Check the electrics.

The Geely I saw had some kind of wiring problem. I could smell the insulation smoldering. Turning on the idicator would kill the head-lights.

I would not touch a Geely again. I would rather find something used from one of the better brands.

Thats a very loose statement. At high speeds it will almost be double. Low speeds it will be much less than double.
 
Dump the line rental and add that to the adsl rental and suddenly we are talking about 1meg being the minimum.

You may be on the right track, but Mythbusters isn't exactly the most accurate source that you should quote. They talk a lot of BS half the time.
Most people would instantly answer that the first collision is more severe because the effective collision speed is 100 km/h, and thus the collision has twice as much force than the second collision, which happens only at 50 km/h.

This answer is wrong, wrong, and utterly wrong. Many people just don't get this one, not even people who should know better. I can't even count how many times I have heard people getting this one wrong.

The most prominent and severe case which I have seen was Jamie Hyneman from the show MythBusters getting this exact problem wrong in their "demolition derby special" episode, where he stated that two trucks travelling at 50 mph each and colliding head-on were subject to a collision force equivalent to hitting a rock wall at 100 mph. Maybe he is not a phycisist, but nevertheless he of all people should know this.

Basically it depends on the mass of the two cars. If they are both exactly the same car and have exactly the same mass, then they will each exert the same amount of force on each other. It doesn't matter if a car hits a brick wall, or an opposing vehicle travelling at the speed, the force exerted on that vehicle will be the same (and similarly for the other vehicle).

You will have a problem if you're involved in a head on collision with a truck that is travelling at the same speed as you, since the force exerted by the truck on your car will be many times that of the force exerted by your car on the truck.
