Yesterday I bought a new Acer Travelmate 6592. I spent half the day trying to connect to the office LAN via wireless, and an hour or two in the evening trying to connect to the LAN via cable. Both produce the same results - DHCP doesn't work, and the laptop doesn't get a LAN IP. I've just now hard-set an IP for the wireless, and while 'connected', it has been stuck on "Identifying..." for about 20 minutes. It doesn't even see the hard-set address; when I ipconfig /all, it still has the 'AutoConfiguration' IP of 169.254.121.130(Preferred).

I really need to get working on the laptop so I can format my desktop, and my only other connectivity options are Bluetooth between my PC and laptop - slow - or somehow connecting my laptop Ethernet to my spare desktop ethernet, and sharing internet at least.

Contact the people who admin the office lan, Sounds like the dhcp server is filtering MAC addresses.

It's pointless configuring a static address for the wireless if you aren't connected to the network.
Are you sure you have configured the encryption settings correctly?
Have you had the MAC address of your wired NIC added to the system?
Have you tried statically assigning an address to the wired NIC?

I am connecting to the network - I can one or two other Vista media shares and machines.

Yes, my encryption settings have been tripple checked, and like I say, I do connect, but the higher level stuff isn't happening.

No, I haven't yet had the MAC address of my wired NIC added, because my wired NIC is effectively useless - I only have one cable socket, for my desktop.

I will try both wired suggestions tonight, thanks.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but what is it that makes you say that you DO connect ?

have u successfully connected it to another wireless network? Maybe you have a general wireless issue instead of an issue with this particular one?

It says "Connected" and I can see some other machines that I know.

The only way you could access other machines on the network is if you were assigned an IP address.

So either some 3rd party software is handling the connection, or you can SEE the other machines, but it's just cached information... i.e. if you try to access it, you get the finger.
