General Photography

Question,

Anyone know someone in Durban that specializes in Lense maintenance?
Have a few Nikkors that could do with some cleaning&service?

Anyone here into classic camera's?
 
that's exactly what I had in mind classic, antique is something else... antique is old and pretty useless cameras from the mists of the development of photography; classic is the good old SLR's that where built like tanks and can still keep up with the best of today's.
 
I've got a shelf full of film gear that I wont even consider using again unless I find the space and time (of which I currently have neither) for a dark room.
 
I know what you mean, no time no space, and no MONEY! have collected a few film items since I was a teenager, but just couldnt afford to learning curve.
So hence im a buff with the equipment and a duff on the taking good photos.

I have a minolta SR-1(broken) canon eos300, and a mint AE-1 program from early 80's(better nick than my eos) and a few basics to get a darkroom set up. but I just got given an old Nikon F2 which is awesome; lenses are still good but need maintenance but don't think I will be able to afford it. so have resolved to get off my butt and use the stuff I have. Seeing as even a basic Digital setup is way outta my league!

last year chatted to some local pro-film photographers and they were trying to get together to purchase chems for dark room together as prices have gone up drastically.

I do. But it was the first film I used, and it was in the Rebel, and I only took about three frames of a night-time city scape. And it was way underexposed (I blame the rebel :p )

Did you have the camera in evaluative metering? That can stuff up night scapes, when there are lots of little lights. Try average.

To be honest, I don't know what it was on. I bought the camera second hand and didn't get a manual with it. But it was likely on evaluative (the default), and the 40D was definitely on evaluative.
 
 
I would wonder if the warranty would cover a botched firmware update . . .

From when I got mine (v1.0.1 I think) until now, all the updates affected specific camera/lens combinations that I didn't have, so I never bothered.

From the link merc posted:

"If there are no problems, repeat the update operations again.

If you still have a problem, please contact the Canon Service Center in your region."

To do the update you actually boot off the card, so weather or not the camera has a working OS on is not relevant. If the update happens to be faulty, you can stick the old firmware on the card and roll back.
 
Random, stupid question...

Starting to think about getting myself a few filters... they can pretty much go on any lens correct?

And yes - they can. :)
 
I was thinking about Hoya since they don't seem to be too expensive, and Polarising and UV to start with..

My bank balance is a bit thin atm so I can't splash out on all the toys I want...
