Is the below TV worth R9699?

http://www.ccereviews.com/reviews/samsung-46-series-5-led-tv-46c5000/

I see it's only 60hz refresh rate? or am I getting something wrong?

Need a new TV and either that for cheaper, or the ua46D6000

UAxxC5000 is indeed 50/60Hz. UAxxD5000 incorporates Samsung Clear Motion Rate which combines refresh rate, backlight and image processor/engine to smooth out images (a lot has to do with the backlight). It's not a true 100Hz processor though AFAIK. The D6000 will undoubtedly be better, with true 100Hz processor.

AFAIK true 100Hz = 200Hz CMR.

He will probably use it to watch TV. If he wants it as a secondary mirror then he should get a Plasma.

:D

/kidding :)

Fair enough but current LED backlit LCDs are generally also extremely reflective (not as much as entry plasma) so may not either suit bright rooms.

^that is spot on.

I was only kidding :) The D6000 is reflective, but not overly so. Its only noticeable if the screen is completely black and there is light directly in front of the screen

So was thinking of not getting the UA46D6000 as I'm not going to use the 3D.
I'd rather buy myself the Samsung Blu-Ray player along with a Sony or LG AMP and Surround sound system.

Viewing distance is about 2.4meters.
Not very bright with curtains closed in the living room.

Is there any other TV worth it in a 46" that will allow me to buy a Blu-Ray player and Surround sound system with AMP?
I saw the Sony and LG ones at House & Home for about R4600 and the Blu-Ray player for about R800

I think max I would pay for those is R15k to R16k

EDIT: Will be watching HD Movies from External HDD/Memory stick .mkv format, and some some DSTV channels, mostly HD.

Your options from Samsung are basically:

UA46D6000 (±R12k)
UA40D6000

PS51D550 (±R9,999) 51" FHD plasma (suits rooms with curtains ;)).

I really wouldn't want to go smaller than 42" as I had the 42" previously.

If going for the UA46D6000 which is R13k at Tafelberg Meubels, it leaves me with very little to buy the player and the amp + surround sound system?

Doh :(

What other model/make (42" or higher) LED is there? The Plasma is starting to look at the best option now.

46" is hardly bigger than 42". The plasma will offer a much better experience, combined with the addition of amp + speakers the saving allows you to buy.

Since you have curtains, it's a no-brainer IMO.

Can't advise on other brands/models, 46" is the biggest you'll get from Samsung in LED backlit LCD.

I see Game in the Cape has the UA46D6000 for R9999 23rd to the 27th.

Having moved from a 42" to a 46" initially yeah it isn't that much bigger, but after a little while you look at a 42" and go hmm that looks small, of course if the pricing was the same for the 51" FHD plasma at the time, it would've been snapped up instead :-D.

Looking for a 40" and a 32" which of these would you recommend?

Samsung LA40D550 - R5400
Sony KDL-40BX420 - R4500

Samsung LA32D550 - R3699
Sony KDL-32CX520 - R3330

Thanks for the advice.

Neither are for me, the 32" will be for a holiday house and the 40" would be used mainly for watching DSTV including sport.

For DSTV and sport, they want 43" plasma. Samsung PS43D450 43" on special at Game for R4,999.

At their budget, entry 43" plasma provides a superior standard definition picture than entry LCD (98% of DSTV is SD) at a bigger size for less, especially if connecting to a DSTV SD decoder (DSTV over HD PVR (HDMI cable) provides a better picture than over RCA as with SD decoders).

Plasma generally also handles sport and motion better, especially at the entry level, a benefit of the technology.

It will also provide a better overall picture, if connected to HD PVR, if viewing distance is around 2m+, because entry plasma (especially Samsung 4 Series plasma vs 5 Series LCD) has superior blacks and colours (when in the right non brightly lit environment). Entry plasma is HD ready (720p), entry LCD is Full HD (1080p), HD PVR is in-between at 1080i. Entry LCD will have a "crisper" image from up close (<1.5 - 2m at 40") as it is able to display more pixels/detail from the HD PVR. I know very people who sit this close to a TV though, where a entry LCD's benefit will outweight a entry plasma's overall improved benefit.

The only down side is entry plasma is as reflective as old CRT box TVs, so doesn't suit brightly lit rooms. Curtains would probably be necessary.

Thanks for the advice, the room is bright and curtains are almost never closed. It will be connected to an HD DSTV decoder.
