Actually saw the ps50c430 for R6499 yesterday in an ad, can't remember where though... Will check tonight when I get home.

My advice to anyone is buy plasma or a high-end lcd.
Never choose a 50hz LCD over a plasma.
I just bought a 200Hz 55" LED (edge-lit) and can i say i have never seen anything better - it is just so real.

However, when comparing to my 50hz TV, i noticed such a massive difference when watching (not just sport) but movies - i could actually see fast action that has made such a big difference.
So i advise never buy a 50hz LCD.

Hey skully. I couldn't agree more. Never ever buy a 50hz LCD.

Still very happy with my la46c750. But yes if your budget is +-6000 plasma is your best bang for your buck.

The reason I say never but a 50 hz LCD is because I went to the showroom plugged in my laptop via hdmi on la40c550 and the ps42c450 it was crazy how much better the movie was on the plasma. Even the sales people couldn't reason spending more money on the la40c550.

But if u can afford more I would get a 200hz plus LCD / led

That Sammy C430 only has a res of 1024x720. 720p at 16x9 aspect ratio is 1280x720. So what happens in this screen? Does 1280x720 video's get squashed to 1024x720? Also, is the squashing noticeable?

There is some minor downscaling. Nothing that you would notice from viewing distance; nothing to make you not consider the set.

It's still a 16:9 720p wide screen HD TV. How, you ask? Rectangular pixels. ;)

Is this both the 42" & 50" c430?

This is really a deal breaker. 1024x720 is ridiculous. I'd rather have a el cheapo Sinotech.

Haha, the res is just numbers on paper. The real question is whether the downscaling is noticeable or not, and as PostmanPot said, it isn't noticeable, so it's shouldn't be a deal breaker. Then again, you might have better eyes than PostmanPot, so what isn't noticeable to him, might be noticeable to you. The best thing to do is have a look at the TV's and judge them for yourself. But bear in mind that TV's in retail stores are set to Torch mode, so you might want to ask a salesman to lower the settings before you compare the TV's.

Indeed. It's not noticeable. But pedantry rules some of us...

And don't forget to stand at viewing distance when comparing - LCD's appear more crisp up close which is also what tricks people into buying them (referring to <R8,000 entry level LCD/plasma). Also test SD and HD.

;)

I went and checked out the Samsung 42" Plasma at stax yesterday. Its quite nice, amazingly the guy trying to sell me had some knowledge of the products. He asked what i wanted to use it for and told me plasma is the better choice.

Very nice compared to a R6,000 LCD ... Quite nice compared to a R12,000 ... OK compared to a R15,000 LCD ...

I actually put on Transformers 2 to test my new TV (not cos it was a great movie but cos of the graphics) and i ended up watching the whole movie cos all of a sudden the action sequences look soooo different. I actually enjoyed the movie.
