Without going through 47 pages, can I get a couple of opinions on the following:
I would like a new TV mainly for sport viewing (normal DSTV) and the occasional DVD. I don't have a HD PVR as of yet but I might possibly get one down the line.
I have a built in wall unit which can only take a 32" screen (maximum width is actually 100cm but a 42" width is generally 103cm). I was considering a 42" Plasma but that is out of the question due to size, so am now considering an LCD which is the Sony KDL32EX400.
Any thoughts ?

That's very unfortunate. Can't you mod the unit to take the plasma? Or get rid of it?
Your only option is a 32" 100Hz ("motion flow") LCD/LED back-lit LCD, which will cost more than a 42" plasma (which would still probably be better
). 42" plasma is R4,999; 32" 100Hz LCD is probably R5,999 minimum (Sony EX500 and up, Samsung 6 Series and up, not sure from LG but possibly "L50" or something).I strongly suggest the first option. When you compare 32" and 42" size wise, you'll know.

I suppose I could dismantle the wall unit but then I'd have to spend another R10k on another one to house books, booze, etc
Viewing distance is only 2.5m, so even with my rapidly diminsihing eyesight brought on by my advancing age, 42" would probably appear as if watching TV through binoculars

I see that both Dion Wired & Cats Digital both have the LG 32INCH 100HZ FHD LED 32LE7500 for R6k.
I've had a LG 74cm Golden Eye for the past 9 years or so that hasn't given me any hassles (apart from a dodgy remote), so are the new LG models any good ?

42" is perfect for 2.5m. Trust me, after a month you'll be wanting the 50" for R6,499!

Yes LG are generally good, prefer Samsung/Sony myself though. Please, only go for that TV if there's no way you can accommodate the 42" plasma.
You think your Golden Eye is old? I've got a Goldstar with built in VHS, must be about 12 years old and still going strong.

Yes, I know it has the Bravia 2 engine which is obviosuly not as good as the Bravia 3 but being a Sony, it can't be all that bad. The EX500 is out of my price bracket at R8k

It's a 60Hz LCD. 60Hz LCD's are the worst thing you can get for sport (especially SD).
Low Hz means fast moving balls/etc. will have trails, something not acceptable for sport.You need 100Hz LCD or plasma.

Managed to see that the LG 42PJ350 Plasma has maximum width of 988mm which would indicate a fit into my wall unit.
Any good ?

I don't know much about it, but from these forums the Samsung PS42C430 is rated higher. Go check it out in store.

It's absolutely nothing to dissuade someone who wants to watch TV/sport/HD/movies from "normal" viewing distance.
Yes, pixel freaks sitting 1.5m from the screen may be concerned.
Have you even seen these 42" plasmas? Perhaps I need to quote some forumite comparisons up close compared to 2" smaller & R1,000 more expensive full HD LCDs, both playing HD media?
Plasma blows them out the water.
Please give it a rest. 42" plasmas are still wide screen 16:9 HD TV's.

Let me clarify my position:
My position is plasma at the entry level of the market. Samsung is my preferred brand because they sell the most and therefore are the best documented on the Internet; as well as based on my experiences with PC LCD's where it is a fact Samsung's are better than LG's - they break less and are subject to better after-sales service/warranty. I have always maintained that with higher budgets, LCD's are good. If you participated more then you would realise that.
1. OP's start threads sometimes without listing their purposes
2. Their purposes could possibly be watching SD TV/sport among other things
3. They have a budget less than that of 100Hz LCD's
4. They will list LCD models and not mention plasma because of their incorrect idea of plasma based on plasma's previous downfalls (burn in, high energy usage, low life span - all of which aren't true these days)
Would you tell me that I am wrong in asking them what their purpose is, and after finding out that they want SD TV and sport, I'm wrong to recommend plasma and explain that plasma does not suffer those problems any more? Am I wrong in explaining the problems with entry level 60Hz LCD's?
Plenty OP's have come here doing exactly what I've mentioned in points 1 - 4 and have ended up going plasma. Why? Because at the lower end of the market, plasma beats LCD. I say it, Dolby says it, TYR says it... Need I say more. Had I not mentioned plasma, at the lower end of the market they would have gone for factually worse LCD and received a worse experience than they would with plasma. And you tell me I'm wrong for trying to help them getting the best experience and value for their buck?
Please accept my position once and for all and stop taking unnecessary jibes that cause forum clutter.

Look at that, more people calling out PostmanPot and more of him trying to defend his position. Really if your case was just plasma for the lower end, do you honestly think there would be this many people calling you out on it, also you must be the only one whose experienced good service from Samsung, as noticing by this forum a lot of people haven't but hey tried that with you last week and it was fobbed off. Really dude just once learn to shut it and stop defending Samsung, it's not like they actually pay you to advertise for them on this forum. Stick to plasma which is fine but over and over we all know what you going to say.
