General Plasma & LCD discussions

Okay back to general discussions then, I'm putting a warning here, when cleaning the bezel of your Samsung screen especially the ones with the Crystal something or other bezel, be very very careful, I cleaned my bezel yesterday and even with the microfibre cloth supplied it scratched it :-( luckily you can only see it in direct light but still, it's scratched my new baby is marked. This has never happened to any of my Samsung monitors

Yeah, you have to be so careful. I suspect a larger/harder than usual spec of dust was caught underneath. I think the only way is a can of air cleaning, followed by microfiber.

I've actually left the plastic on my stand on.

Yeah I suspect some dust was hard too :-( though it wasn't the stand it was the black bezel around the screen sigh :-( I should've left the plastic on around the bezel but then it looks ugly :-(. Luckily you can only really see it if direct light hits the screen, my wife says I'm obsessing about it, as when I walk past the TV I look for more scratches. So be warned those with glossy black bezels be careful.

Gonna leave it, stop being paranoid about it I think, listen to the wife ;-) my post should just be a warning to others :-D.

Which one do you have at home?

I don't have, I had. A two year old 42" LG HDReady one.

Which "some people" in your family? Are you sure they're even blood relations... ;)

Yes but none of your business.

Which darked out viewing rooms, where?

The guys at both Canal Walk and Cavendish Audiovision stores were very helpful and put them in the viewing rooms for me. Also spent some time in some LG, Sony and other specialist TV stores in Joburg which had nice viewing rooms. Again none of your business.

Must say I'm a little under whelmed with my LCD. Right now for how I am using it I prefer the plasma. Saturdays rugby killed it for me.

Ah k, so you were clearly after higher resolution, cause even those 2 year old LG's are decent (even the newer ones aren't as good as newer Samsung Series 4 plasma, according to those who've tested).

Boohoo. :(

What did they put in the viewing rooms?

Seems everything is becoming "not my business". Perhaps you should cease replying to me if you're not willing to discuss.

This is why I was quite shocked when you told us you bought the LA46D550 after/while being a plasma owner. I knew it would not perform at motion. :(

You have 14 days, AFAIK. ;)

That is strange... I am really happy with my 46EX500 LCD... sport on HD is absolutely amazing... colour, movement, everything, but it is 100Hz (motinflow). I have disabled motion flow before and didn't notice much difference. My friends 40V550 is also very good for sport (and he only has normal DSTV), so I'm surprised that you are so unhappy. My dad's Panasonic 42PV700 plasma definitely looks pretty bad with most normal DSTV channels - the Samsung 51D550 plasma that I had was a lot better than the older Panasonic!

He's unhappy because entry plasma handles motion better than entry LCD, which is what he's used to having owned two plasma's prior. Your LCD is mid range, cannot compare with entry level Samsung 5 Series.

Yes, I know that... I am just surprised that it is so unhappy, and that my mid-range LCD is great, even with Motion Flow off. I expected him to notice a difference, but only a minor difference.

Disabling motionflow doesn't simply lower your model to his. Yours is superior overall, better panel, better at handling any motion, SD, TV, etc.

You can. Take a 6 series LCD and put it next to a 5. Turn motion flow off and I can promise you that you won't be able to spot any difference. I dare you to go into a shop and test this.

Yeah it's pissing me off. When the camera pans it makes me dizzy. I literally get car sick watching this set!!! Could be my eyes though. Got an appointment with an Optometrist on the 26th...

EDIT: Not sure the best way to describe what I'm experiencing. Lets say that a paused close up of someone's face is very detailed but as soon as they moving the creases etc on their faces smudge!! Motion blur??

EDIT: SQ01 panel btw

Please don't talk nonsense to me. If you can't spot a difference then I'm surprised you over exaggerate FHD so much.

Motion flow sounds like a gimmick to me. If it made such a difference it would be the default setting without the option to switch it off or on but marketers insist on having it as an "extra" to try con the user into believing there exists a tool that actually works to reduce motion blur... (is that what it's used for)??....

Yes, probably better description would be white level/shadow ghosting. See some discussion bout it starting here ... http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...sma-Bargains?p=6454132&viewfull=1#post6454132

From my experience this does not seem to have anything to do with panel technology, but rather a signal processing issue induced by the quality/format(conv etc) of the HD feed. The Super 15 final that gave you this effect came from Aus, but if you watched any of the local games (shot using SS own cameras), the ghosting is not there (same TV, same settings).

Now I believe this same issue must be occuring with a HD-Ready plasma, all after the 4 series signal processor (DSP) wont be of a higher quality than 5 series. There are two reasons I can think of why it wouldnt be apparent to the eye (a) less detail in downscaled picture (b) pixel strobing of plasma panel fools the eye into not seeing it.

Will see if I can check it out on the usual weekend shopping centre trawl.

Yeah that sounds plausible. Haven't had the LCD long enough to watch local feed but CC will be the test.

Again, makes sense. My plasma is 2 years old and there definitely isn't the detail and clarity of the newer FHD LCD.

Another indicator is the blades of grass, distinct and clear and detailed when the frame is not moving and blurred when the game/camera is moving... Prevalent on both the plasma and lcd but more so on the lcd.
