General Plasma & LCD discussions

Which Plasmas have anti reflection measures?

I doubt there is anything after market you can do about it or is there

How is their performance in comparison to the new models?

Haven't seen the new ones. AFAIK it's the same panel as in the C430's so yeah.

Personally I can't fault mine :D, only SD/HD DSTV, sport, and HD .mkv's - no FHD stuff. Perhaps I should say I can't fault it considering it was R6,000 at the time and 40" entry FHD LCD was [as usual] R1,000 - R1,500 more expensive and worse at the aforementioned tasks. Okay HD stuff is debatable as it evens things out, but at SD the plasma is awesome. I would have only considered LCD if I needed FHD and didn't watch much sport.

How is their performance in comparison to the new models?

The new D series panels are all new panels - they are 43" (compared to the older 42").

From what I have read, the new D-series image quality is a bit better (I didn't do a detailed comparison in the shop). Also, the new range is much less prone to image retention.

Some of the Panasonic range also have AR coatings - definitely the V range (42V20 and 50V20) - Prices around R15k and R20k respectively.

How did you come to that conclusion?

Basically each Series, 3/4/5/6/7 etc., uses the same type panel/internals that affect the panel/picture quality (bar AU, CN and SQ panel differences). And that the latter part of the model number, i.e. C430, C450, C530, C550 etc. only refers to added features such as extra HDMI ports, USB media player, etc. Panel/picture quality is the same.

That's my understanding. Yours?

and burn in?

and burn in?

Burn-in is meant to be a non-issue with plasmas these days... but you still do come across the occasional thread on forums where people have had very bad image retention.... like an image that stays for weeks... it is very rare though.

Hi Guys,

I have been following for a while....I am busy in the process of buying a decent HD TV.
Looks like I am going for this: http://www.catsdigital.co.za/samsung-ua-40d6000-40-200hz-full-hd-3d-led-tv-t-b-a-.html

What do you think about this? I guess that the price is not too bad, considering that it used to be 25 grand a year ago?
I would be using it watching DSTV (SD) as well as HD content (Blu Ray, 720p/1080i from my Hard Drive) in 50/50 proportions.

Later on I am planning to upgrade mys system with a 3D BR player...only then I would buy the glasses.

My viewing distance is app. 2m.

What are your opinions? Can I go wrong with it?

Good price but personally I would suggest stretching your budget by R1,000 for 51" full HD plasma (Samsung PS51D550). Will be much better suited for what you need it for (SD TV). And it's 11" bigger...

The only time I would not recommend it is if your room is brightly lit/direct sunlight etc. as plasma's are more reflective. Then rather get the LA46D550, R7,999. It's not 100/200Hz, but handles motion well enough. 40" is tiny...

I have the LA46D550 and it does handle motion really, really well, I was quite surprised put some Wipeout HD on and was like wow.

my concern was the viewing distance...that it might become pixelated.
Yeah, personally for me, 40" is just fine from 2m. If you're predominantly going to be watching SD DSTV channels, theres little point is stretching the same 720x576 pixels across another 6" or 11".

Depends on how finicky you are about PQ/motion clarity, but I would go to a store that has the D6000 (LED/200Hz) & the D550 (LCD/50Hz) near each other to see if the D6000 really provides a tangible/noticable improvement for you (PQ/motion/3D etc). If not I'd get the D550 and spend the diff on a HDPVR2P, which provides a much crisper SD DSTV picture over HDMI (+ bonus of HD channels if you have a premium sub).

Hello,

Can someone please give me the settings for optimal viewing please? I mean the colour / contrast / brightness etc. TAking in consideration that the TV is in my bedroom, and the room is not too bright. My screen looks very faded in a way - there is colour, but its like its not as bright. I have the setting on movie now - when its on standard it kinda looks blurry - and on movie setting its more smooth. Please give advice as to what settings will make the screen and colour crisp and clear. The tv in question is the Samsung 32" LA32D550

There are some settings in here - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/346013-Anybody-bought-the-LA32D550.

Movie mode will appear dimmer, think the smoothness is because it locks the fps to 24fps (or that of the media?).

Anyway, for better brightness, you'll probably want to use the Standard picture setting, and then fiddle with individual settings from there. Dynamic is too contrasty (washed out colours).

Hey PostmanPot. Thank you very much! Yes, I tried standard and movie and movie seems smoother, but colours dimmer. I will go have a look at that thread. Thank you very much!!
