General Plasma & LCD discussions

So I spent some time with the new Sony 46" CX520 - supposedly the same panels as the Samsung 46" D550 (Sony and Samsung have a joint LCD panel manufacturing venture).

Motion artefacts in sport are clearly evident via HD PVR/1080i, you can literally see each horizontal line tearing. Especially visible on faces while panning.

I guess this is the problem with the interlaced feed, and why 720p is preferred over 1080i.

I cannot understand how the Samsung 46" 5 Series will be better. Two folk on these forums say that they generally have no motion artefacts via HD PVR/1080i. I find this hard to believe, but will reserve judgement until I've actually tested that TV.

What I can say is that I have none of this on my 42" plasma via HD PVR/1080i.

I see plasma's are readily available in FHD most of the ones I see in stores are all 720 not 1080.

So I guess when I get a 42' it'll be a LCD, Plus the lighting in my lounge wouldn't be suitable for a plasma.

In that case, you will have to go for 40" LCD. Probably best to go for the Samsung LA40D550, should be around R5,999 (R1,000 more than 42" plasma :().

Unless you can afford a 100Hz LCD.

D550 was on special for R1000 about a week ago. I'm sure it'll pop up again for that price

100hz hmm if i can get a 120Hz maybe I can go 3D with out paying for the cost the "3D TV" marketing cost. :D

I really want a TV with Wireless then I need to get a tablet and a media server with wireless and shove all that in some cupboard. So all the TV has plugged in is the power cable and you used the Tablet to control the TV with.

But I like your idea better, then don't have to spend lots of money I don't have. :D

Well you can get a wifi adaptor for +-R350 for the LA40D550. Then you can do everything from your tablet as you described. You can even use it as a remote control as well as for dlna (stream movies/pics/music).

That's what I am doing except my TV is plugged into my wifi router (same functionality)

Just make sure you don't end up spending it on window shutters. :D

But this has nothing to do with the panel. These are signal processing errors happening in the DSP before being displayed by the panel.

Cant comment on the Sony CX, but I dont see anything as dramatic as you describe on my C530 at home or C5000 LED at the office. Maybe Samsung 5 series DSPs/algorithms are better? Not saying there wont be any motion corruption on a 5 series (50Hz) displaying a 1080i feed, but the times this is apparent to me is infrequent/negligable compare to constant benefit of a very sharp high-fidelity 1920x1080 picture.

There are other influencing factors too, was the CX running in 1:1 pixel or 16:9 output mode? De-interlacing + scaling is more taxing on the DSP and prone to more processing errors. Also the quality of the 1080i feed has a lot to do with it, you need to check out various event feeds (both local/intl shot).

What I can say is that I have none of this on my 42" plasma via HD PVR/1080i.
I'm guessing scaling the picture down to 1024x768 doesnt provide enough fine detail to percieve similar levels of motion corruption. Its not like the 4 series plasmas have any better DSPs than the 5 series, and they're not immune to signal processing issues.

That's my feeling as well. It probably is a signal issue on DSTVs side. You just can't make it (the motion corruption) out on a display 1024x768 since you loose so much detail.

Yeah I'll wait and see a 46" 5 Series myself. I didn't get that far in the settings, but I will next time.

Looks better to me. I can't perceive a difference in detail from 2m viewing distance.

Please give the time we must jump to.
