General Plasma & LCD discussions

I'm watching soccer on SS3 on my plasma (51D550) and I'm seeing a bit of ghosting/artifacts. I thought plasma was supposed to be good for sports, how bad is it on an LCD then?

I've had none on my LCD and no one said there'd be none, just apparently less.

Thats because some around here place too much importance on panel technology, when in reality most HDTV picture imperfections are due to signal/signal processing issues.

Modern flatsceen TVs, when used with HDMI input are pure digital, meaning the performance of the central DSP hw and proficiency of the (proprietary to each vendor) sw algorithms they run are far more instumental in generating the best picture (along with transitions i.e. motion handling).

The panel & its driver circuitry are merely servants of the DSP, acting upon its instruction on how to display each frame. No doubt some panel technologies are better at keeping up with instructed transitions, but the DSP's algorithms would be designed to take this into account.

Hi all - especially Samsung owners but all input welcome.
I have another question regarding the built-in media player of my Samsung 43D450 plasma.
I find that a number of my files just stop playing at random points. One file played great until just over 2 hours in then stopped. I segmented the rest of the film into 2 and the first segment (which included the previous "stop" point) played fine - about 50 minutes. The last segment got about 9 minutes in then stopped again (at which point I gave up and watched the ending on my laptop!).
Does anyone have suggestions on how to get around this? FWIW many of these files were mkv's but I have in the past had the same problem playing avi's through my DVDs USB port.
Thanks.

sounds like an issue with the actual file. Recode them or download from a different source...

Plasma is good for sports. A helluva lot better than LCD. :) While it can be dependent on the source, I don't think anyone in their right mind would ever say that there would be no motion distortion on a 60Hz plasma.

I have tried a few of the freeware progs; seem to take long. I did dabble with Handbrake a while ago but that was for something else; perhaps it'll work for this and will try again.
Thanks.

Used for compressing videos / making them smaller.

But IIRC there is a splitting option as well.

Plasma is good for sports.
Fast pixel response times are not the be all & end all of motion handling.

In low frame rate situations like 1080i HDTV or 1080p24 Bluray, motion blur (plasmas not prone to) and judder (plasmas are prone to) are opposite sides of the same coin. The trick for TVs circuitry is to provide the right balance giving the peception of fluid motion (which will vary by viewer preference).

Play around with the motion blur on the 25fps moon to check differences here http://frames-per-second.appspot.com/

Hi All,
Small question on dvd upscaling on my PS51D550

My setup is, LG bd670 blu ray player with Samsung ps51d550
i find the dvd upscaling is has a bit too much of pixels showing
if i compare it my previous setup, 50" hd ready plasma with sony bdp370, the previous setup was much more clearer on the upscaling
Any thoughts on whether it could be normal as its a Full hd screen or something could be wrong
Thanks

From the reviews I have read, the Sony BDP370 had very good upscaling - perhaps the LG's upscaling isn't so good and this is the cause of your problem?

Will the samsung bd5500 be a bit better?

I couldn't find much info about the locally available Samsungs or LGs...
They didn't feature at all on www.whathifi.com (which is where I was referred for the Sony review) when I looked.
Suggest Google-ing the model - perhaps there are new reviews out now.

I noticed that What hifi is anti LG and pro Samsung on certain things
There was a few disc reading probs with the samsung players
But will check again
Thanks

What format/res is the LG upscaling to?

Also is your TV running in 1:1 pixel mapping mode (Samsung = Screen Fit)?

LG running at 1080p and tv on screen fit
My main dvd player is PS3 which is superb upscaler, but I also have a R599 Philips DVD player from 2 years ago, and it does a very good job of upscaling to 1080p. If you look closely not as good as the PS3, but very decent with no pixelation or any other serious picture distortion.

Strange that a BD capable player (newer/more powerful DSP scaler) would create such a bad/corrupt picture? Have you tried setting the LG to different output formats e.g. 1080i, 720p, 576p etc. to see if the TV's DSP can do a better upscaling/de-interlacing job (shouldnt).

Also an upscaled dvd picture will never match a true 1080p source, maybe you need to tune your TV's settings a bit to de-emphasise the imperfection e.g. brightness, contrast, sharpness, gamma, HDMI black levels, digital/mpeg flitering, colour space, film mode etc.
