Hi All

For those here that are originally from a different country (dutch/english/russian/afghan/whatever), whether yourself or a few generations back - I have a question.

Do you feel a need/drive (however faint) to "return to your roots" geographically speaking? Ignoring language barriers, passports, financial consideration & whatnot.

You mean whose ancestors originally were from another country or those here that we're born in another country and came to South Africa?

In my case I have British, Irish, Dutch and German ancestry. Lived in the UK for 5 years but it never felt like home. I have to say that this bottom piece of Africa truly is home and I feel it in my bones.

As much as I enjoy being here I do regularly get an urge to go back home.

My Dad's side of the family originate from Belgium. I was born and raised in SA but i would like to go and visit Belgium and meet some people with the same surname as me :)

Not a bloody chance.

My "ancestral home" as it were is a hellhole, its cold and overcrowded. The pommies can keep their place, I don't want anything to do with it.

Not one iota. I'm half Irish half german 2 generations removed. Neither of these countries interest me at all. Maybe for a tour but not a lifestyle.

No, but I don't consider anywhere my 'home' in the sentimental sense.

Yes I was born here but I don't identify with anything 'south african' in terms of any cultures here.

I definitely want to travel around though....

Hmm, that would be Holland and Germany...

I don't really feel much affinity for anywhere. If I had the resources, I'd live in a new country every year, if I could.

Not really, I'm a Lusophone, although my father was originally from Portugal.

So many porras living here, it's difficult to imagine missing any roots.

Every now and then I visit the country of my birth, which is right next door. :D

I'm glad we left England when we did. Children these days have no damn manners. It would take a massive salary to get me to go back to that freezing cold too.
